Also on entering and leaving Turkey you require a visa and your passport will have dated entry and exit stamps.
When we visited Istanbul we had to go via Athens because of the wife's third country status.

That's correct RW though I did say when entering Turkey plus there is a new visa system for Turkey; you now have to apply on line rather than buy a visa on entry.
