Enosis day what are they thinking?
Enosis day what are they thinking?
What is the Greek Cypriot side thinking of when negotiations for a peaceful settlement is within reach. Something that was proposed in 1950 when under British rule and then not proceeded with when granted their freedom in 1960. How can they think by making an Enosis day for schoolchildren at this late stage will not upset the Turkish side? Wasn't the 1974 invasion a result of it being proposed again by the Greek side? I now have many doubts that this will ever be settled and if so,that will be a shame for both sides when they have such a beautiful island.

I thought Cyprus voted against joining Greece?

The reunification talks were dead in the water anyway.

Turkish Cypriot 33rd Anniverary of the TRNC celebrations/marches on 15th November 2016 - took place during the current talks process - What were they thinking!
Turkish Cypriot celebrations to mark the day of invasion on 20th July 2016 . Also during the current talks process. - What were they thinking!
For god sake let's not upset the Turkish Cypriot side but it's fine the other way round. Personally I think all should be on hold during reunification talks.

You make a very valid point, Lofos-Jan, but I thought the Greek Cypriots actually voted NOT to join with Greece, so what is the purpose of this day?

Re: Enosis day what are they thinking?
Have a little look on google re the coup d' etat, the military Junta in Greece at that time wanted to annex Cyprus to the Hellenic Republic. Markarios was against this and had to flee for his life via the British base to Malta then onto the UK. This was caused by Sampson "the new president" for a few days and that was when the Turks invaded in July. Something similar happened in Crete in 1913 when the Hellenic Republic called for "Enosis" there and the smaller Turkish community was ignored. Look up the Greek Turkish war at that time.
So, this was not going to happen again, hence, to protect the Turks they invaded and so today we are close to an impasse. Don't they realise that they have a beautiful island to look after. Forget all the past and and make Cyprus the one stable place in the Eastern Mediterranean.

On a lighter note. I didn't wonder what would happen regarding bank holidays in the event of a settlement as there are currently 24 altogether (21 fixed date bank holidays and 3 movable ones) between both communities.

Being regular visitors to Cyprus over the last 9 years, we notice there always seems to be an abundance of Greek national flags flying all over the island, does this mean there is still a strong feeling for Enosis amongst the Cypriot population? Surely, given the mess Greece is in at the moment that would be the last thing they would want.

Don't also forget that Cyprus was offered twice to Greece during the Colonial (British) period of rule here. On both occasions Greece turned it down!
As someone said Greece is in a real financial mess now. Its recent request for another loan from the EU was reported as being turned down.
It makes little financial sense for the Cypriots to want union with it.
I wonder how much real interest Greece has in Cyprus given its own huge problems?
Real leadership is needed on this island as the island needs to be reunited for its own good and to stand on its own feet.
But this isn't likely to happen.

Have been to the North and yes just as many Turkish flags there, I daresay that if the same question was put to the Turkish Cypriots some would be happy for union with Turkey. It would be good to see the Island united again. but.........!Dominic wrote: ↑Thu Feb 16, 2017 9:50 amNot to mention the huge flag carved into the side of the mountain!LouiseCastricum wrote: ↑Thu Feb 16, 2017 12:11 amHave you seen the Turkish national flags in the north?cypruswannabee wrote: ↑Wed Feb 15, 2017 11:45 pm Being regular visitors to Cyprus over the last 9 years, we notice there always seems to be an abundance of Greek national flags flying all over the island, does this mean there is still a strong feeling for Enosis amongst the Cypriot population? Whatever the flag/s on the mountain are, they are clearly designed to wind up the Greek Cypriots. The Aquila wrote: ↑Thu Feb 16, 2017 1:44 pmApologies for going slightly off topic.Dominic wrote: ↑Thu Feb 16, 2017 9:50 amNot to mention the huge flag carved into the side of the mountain!LouiseCastricum wrote: ↑Thu Feb 16, 2017 12:11 am

The one carved into the mountain is the Turkish Cypriot flag, the colours are the opposite of the Turkish flag.
I once asked a Cypriot bar owner why they fly the Greek flag and not the Cypriot one and her reply was "the Cypriot Flag was designed by a turk"...
It/they appear to have fulfilled their mission!

This probably won't amount to any bigger deal than public holidays / Jewish holidays / Muslim holidays in the UK. Given a bit of tolerance everyone's views can be respected. In fact they seem to cope OK before 1974 in Cyprus.

Re: Enosis day what are they thinking?
Perhaps one can understand why. Over recent months there have been several attacks on Turkish Cypriots and their cars when they are in the south quite legitimately. The most recent being the one on Troodos when TC families brought their children over to show them the snow while the kids were on half term. Some no brain idiots slashed their car tyres while parked in Troodos Square. Sickening and quite un necessary. Just one example of this type of behaviour. No wonder they want to live in a seperate area where they can feel secure.

Wiki makes it clear that the flag was designed by art teacher İsmet Güney who was indeed a Turkish Cypriot.

This also happened but the other way round, some years ago to RoC registered vehicles whilst parked up in the big car park at Kyrenia/Girne....Kili01 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 16, 2017 7:25 pm Perhaps one can understand why. There will always be divisions as long as people are labelled Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot.
