A good start, what you have to take into account are the spin offs from his punishment, no wages coming into the family, might lose his job if it needs a driving licence , higher insurance policies, criminal record etc etc.

Why has it taken from August 2017 to now for him to sentenced?

Because that's how long it takes for some cased to actually come in front of the Judge. The defendant may be called to court numerous times only for the court proceeding to be cancelled and put forward to another date. And then the same thing happens again...and again..

:x
Im not sticking up for him, and if I knew of anyone drink driving, I wouldn't hesitate to grass them up, I had a close family member run over by a drunk driver back in London, what I was trying to get over was, the Judge heard all of his circumstances and gave him the sentence he saw fit, neither you or me were in court , so no good guessing if he had money or not.

The police would only have to park up near many of the bars and pubs to pick up numerous drinkers climbing into their cars and driving off over the limit.

Would they do it in UK I wonder?

ChrisPam, yes most certainly the Police do target drink drivers (and disqualified drivers) in the UK.

Basically you identify a vehicle parked on licensed premises (those close to the front doors are best as they have been there the longest), check the index number so you know the address and hence which way they are likely to be going when they leave, wait for them, stop them and deal with the situation.
