How do you gift a property to relatives?

Post by Uncle D »

Hi, my MIL wants to gift her house to her two daughters, one my wife lives in Cyprus the other in Canada.
She said that she had read on a site called PEGI that there is a lot of red tape involved, I cant find this site.
Any info appreciated

Probably depends where the house is as jurisdictions differ from country to country. U.K. Or Cyprus?

My FIL gifted his share of the property to his Daughter... We got Gwenny services to do all the running about. There was almost no charge from the land registry..
As far as I know it is the same as a Sale but no money changes hands

Hi Trev, can you remember how much the total cost was or how much did Gwenny charge?

I am sorry I can't remember the costs Uncle D.. But the government charges were just a few 10's of euros as there is no charge to transfer to another relative. Apart from the small charge for the paper deed.

I can't remember Gwennys charges but I did not think them dear... A phone call to her would give you an idea.
There was some running about for her to do including at the village office to get things signed off.

Just rang Gwenny's office and apparently we need to use a lawyer as Gwenny doesnt do that kind of work.
Thanks anyway

That is strange news. I wonder if she has stopped doing it.. She did all the paperwork for us, but it was maybe 4 years ago..
So if you now Have to use a lawyer the cost will certainly be dear..
