Could this possibly be seen as a hint of good news?
It appears that as some EU workers have left the UK,this has sparked an immense growth in apprenticeships, not just for the young but for older people as well who are apparently enjoying the opportunity to learn new skills. The UK 's unemployment is now at 4% which is half of that of the EU and seems likely to reduce further as these apprenticeships mature. As EU workers return to the EU,will they actually have jobs to go back to or will their return just serve to increase the unemployment figures in the EU?

Is there a source for this tale of joy or are we just supposed to take your word for it?

It may well be easy but not to me on this tablet which I am currently using whilst on my UK travels. I would suggest that you might look at the Financial Times however. Ah just seen that you found a report in the Express too - seems as though they were both written on the same date.
Re: Could this possibly be seen as a hint of good news?
From the Express Report:
__________________________________________________________________________________________
Firms are struggling to find qualified replacements for EU migrants who have left the UK since the Brexit referendum in 2016.
The number of EU migrants working in the UK has fallen by 86,000 to 2.28million over the past year, according to Government data.
But many companies believe this so-called 'Brexodus' could boost demand for British apprentices to replace departing workers.
IT firm West Coast has hired 15 UK sales apprentices at its office in Halifax, West Yorkshire this year, and hopes to get more on board.

Re: Could this possibly be seen as a hint of good news?
Could it be that the reason for drops in apprenticeships is because any Tom, Dick or Harry with practically no qualifications can wangle their way into so-called universities? When I was a school leaver, it was essential to have at least a Scottish Senior Leaving Certificate with a minimum of three or four Highers and two Lowers, all obtained in the same year, before any university in the country would accept you. It may be argued that this is a kind of educational elitism, but it meant that anyone with a Scottish degree was well educated. In those days, even apprenticeships required five years of night school to obtain a Higher National Certificate.

I like that word "Brexodus" , another "B" word for us .
Re: Could this possibly be seen as a hint of good news?
Fifteen sales apprenticeships seems to be a start of sorts
City and Guilds, ONC and HNC are still around, NVQ's seem to be used a lot now.
I didnt know that there were apprenticeships in sales.

Re: Could this possibly be seen as a hint of good news?
I think there's a bit of a difference between a "Trainee" Sales person and a proper apprenticeship though I guess it's all in the presentation.
I wouldn't think you would get a yearly recruitment figure when only three quarters through the year; maybe 2018 totals will appear in January 2019.
I post my links on my mobile so you should be able to do the same on a Tablet.

Perhaps if you read the report through Dominic then you would have seen that 119,500 enrolled in the first 3 quarters of 2017/18 up from 11,000 in the previous year. Now surely anyone can only agree that this is a positive substantial increase.

Should be alright in about ten years then once they get their apprenticeship behind them and then a few years practical experience.

OK Uncle D if you want to trade insults then do so.I probably am completely inept so who cares?
It absolutely amazes me that not one of you can see that the vast increase in genuine apprenticeships is surely good news. I'm really not sure that the majority of apprenticeships last for 10 years, mine some 50 odd years ago certainly did not.
In a genuine debate then most people can normally accept some parts of any argument but on here people who voted remain have such a blinkered view that they can just not accept that there is some good news about.

Re: Could this possibly be seen as a hint of good news?
I served a 5 year apprenticeship as a Joiner. But it seem nowadays that the word apprentice refers to a different thing.
A few years ago our granddaughter told us she had an apprenticeship.. In fact she was on a zero hours contract in a sweet shop !!

Re: Could this possibly be seen as a hint of good news?
I was an indentured apprentice for five years and it took me and my colleagues about five years after completion of apprenticeship and four years at college to get established. These genuine apprenticeships you talk about are just trainees; we used to call them "Diluties" or six month wonders, at best semi skilled and at worst bloody hopeless. These training courses have been around a lot longer than Brexit but these days people are forced onto them or their benefits will be stopped.

Jim I do feel so sorry for you.You have such a jaundiced and despondent view of the UK. Don't worry! Be happy! Everything will be OK on the night!!
