I thought it was brilliant when I first saw it last week. Didn’t have a clue it was an advert at first as I’d just switched on.

So (excuse my lack of education, thought playing sport was more important!), what do these words from the song mean?

1. Scaramouch
2. Fandango
3. Gallileo and Gallileo Figaro
4. Bismillah
5. Beelzebud

Full words from the song are -
Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide
No escape from reality
Open your eyes
Look up to the skies and see
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy
Because I'm easy come, easy go
A little high, little low
Anyway the wind blows, doesn't really matter to me, to me
Mama, just killed a man
Put a gun against his head
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead
Mama, life had just begun
But now I've gone and thrown it all away
Mama, ooo
Didn't mean to make you cry
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow
Carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters
Too late, my time has come
Sends shivers down my spine
Body's aching all the time
Goodbye everybody I've got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth
Mama, ooo (anyway the wind blows)
I don't want to die
I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all
I see a little silhouetto of a man
Scaramouch, scaramouch will you do the fandango
Thunderbolt and lightning very very frightening me
Gallileo, Gallileo,
Gallileo, Gallileo,
Gallileo Figaro - magnifico
But I'm just a poor boy and nobody loves me
He's just a poor boy from a poor family
Spare him his life from this monstrosity
Easy come easy go will you let me go
Bismillah! No we will not let you go - let him go
Bismillah! We will not let you go - let him go
Bismillah! We will not let you go let me go
Will not let you go let me go (never)
Never let you go let me go
Never let me go ooo
No, no, no, no, no, no, no
Oh mama mia, mama mia, mama mia let me go
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me
For me
For me
So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye
So you think you can love me and leave me to die
Oh baby, can't do this to me baby
Just gotta get out just gotta get right outta here
Ooh yeah, ooh yeah
Nothing really matters
Anyone can see
Nothing really matters nothing really matters to me
Anyway the wind blows

The advert works because people are talking about it.

My other half watched an advert the other day and said "That's a nice advert", I replied "Was it what was it advertising?" No idea she replies, so the company wasted many thousands of pounds making it!
Go Compare is a most annoying advert but everyone knows the company as the advert is so annoying!

I think that Barry Scott is the worst advert ever made and as for June popping round to look at his parsnips, I'll not mention the products being advertised, let's see if anyone watches as much TV as me or just does the fast forward on catch up

I'm always blown away by Bohemia Rhapsody -it was thought it would never be a hit because it was considered too long but it has consistently been No.1 of the all time greats.

Lloyd the John Lewis Christmas advert this year is to be performed by Elton John, filming has already started and the approximate fee for Elton is around 5 million pounds.

Rita I've always been a massive fan of Bohemian Rhapsody, ever since I saw the video, the very fist music video ever. Queen could do no wrong for me, still can't!

Lloyd this is just THE best advert I have ever seen, remarkable and moving, all I can say is if you do not like this where is your heart?

This is more than the standard advert (film) a few more goings on.

I just felt it belonged in a scene from Love Actually or a similar film. It is nice enough but I don't think it screams "John Lewis" at anybody.

Bohemian Raphsody wasn’t close to being first music video. Popular misconception.

Personally I would switch over after a couple of seconds, but the advert works, because everyone's talking about it.

Many were attributed as the 'first' but, as Brian May says here, Queen were the first and best actual video.

Yeah but they are talking about the advert. Nobody's talking about John Lewis.

Take your point Dominic, but I guess john Lewis will get a mention somewhere along the way?

I'm just happy because it gave me an excuse to post a video link to Arnold Layne. :)

And here's another slightly later Floyd video (1968):

Often wondered too - so I checked... (still got too much time at my hand maybe...)

Lyrical references in the Opera passage of the song (from 3:05–4:07) include Scaramouche, the fandango, Galileo Galilei, Figaro, Beelzebub and Bismillah, as rival factions fight over the narrator's soul.

1: Scaramouch (from Italian scaramuccia, literally "little skirmisher"), also known as scaramouch, is a stock clown character of the commedia dell'arte (comic theatrical arts of Italian literature). The role combined characteristics of the Zanni (servant) and the Capitano (masked henchman).

2: Fandango is a lively couples dance from Spain, usually in triple metre, traditionally accompanied by guitars and castanets or hand-clapping ("palmas" in Spanish). Fandango can both be sung and danced. The meter of fandango is similar to that of the bolero and seguidilla.

3: Gallileo figaro magnifico is a slightly corrupted Latin phrase, "Galileo figuro magnifico", translated as "Magnify the Galilean's image"

4: Word origin of 'Bismillah' shortened from Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim, from Arabic, literally: in the name of God, the merciful and compassionate.

5: Beelzebub is also identified in the New Testament as the devil, "prince of the demons". Biblical scholar Thomas Kelly Cheyne suggested that it might be a derogatory corruption of Ba'al Zəbûl, "Lord of the High Place" (i.e., Heaven) or "High Lord".

Much "deeper" than today's commercial songs in the charts I would think, and not one single F word in it...
