UK Passports valid for more than 6 months to travel?
UK Passports valid for more than 6 months to travel?
Under current arrangements, Britons can travel to Europe as long as their passport is valid to the end of their stay. But in the event of a ‘no-deal’ Brexit they would in all likelihood be treated like travellers from non-EU countries.
As a result, any passport without at least six months left before it expired would be invalid for travel. That could mean a glut of applications for passport renewals.

Why ............. even if it happens, surely it just means that you will be renewing your passport 6 months earlier than you planned to do anyway?

Re: UK Passports valid for more than 6 months to travel?
If you renew your passport early, up to 9 months, the remaining months are added to your passport.
So if your passport is due to expire soon best the rush and renew now.

'would', 'could' = Project Fear
If no Brexit deal.
If no Brexit deal.

And I guess if you renew it now, you get to keep the red passport rather than a blue one...

It was reported on BBC News that the extension period when you renew your passport early has now been scrapped so passports are only valid for ten years from date of issue.

I have just read that this morning. Very sneaky. New rules applied from September 10th.
Re: UK Passports valid for more than 6 months to travel?
Yes Rattypatty, it appears a Minister at the Home Office ( according to BBC news) sneaked it in under the radar as it were.

TIME you gave us all some “project joy” - as you are great at knocking people’s concerns, but unable to provide all this heap of Good news....

Just found this link on another site with effect from Monday 10th September:
Starting this week, the long-established practice of crediting a new passport with unexpired time from the old passport has been dropped. The change was uncovered by the Money Saving Expert website after multiple users reported they had been “short-changed” when renewing their passports.
UK passports issued from October 2019 will have blue covers, not the current burgundy. The move is intended “to restore our national identity and forge a new path for ourselves in the world”, according to the Conservative Party chairman, Brandon Lewis.

Re: UK Passports valid for more than 6 months to travel?
Yes.
The Home Office finally acknowledged the rule change four days after it was introduced.
Apparently, it's due to... Brexit...
https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/ ... l-brexit-/
The Government today published a collection of papers titled How to prepare if the UK leaves the EU with no deal....
In the event of NO deal... you may have to renew your passport early. After 29 March 2019, you'll need to renew your passport in advance if you plan to travel to certain EU countries and your passport will be older than nine years and six months on the date you plan to travel.
If it is older than nine years and six months on the day you travel, you will not be able to travel to the following countries: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Re: UK Passports valid for more than 6 months to travel?
I just checked on the passport office site , and it is true what is being reported.
So my passport now expires on the date issued and not on the date of the extended period , could catch some people out .
“Rules for passports
The rules for travel to most countries in Europe will change if the UK leaves the European Union (EU) with no deal.
After 29 March 2019:
You should have 6 months left on your passport from your date of arrival. This applies to adult and child passports.
If you renewed a 10 year adult passport before it expired, extra months may have been added to your passport’s expiry date. These extra months will not count.
The new rules will apply to passports issued by the UK, Gibraltar, Guernsey, the Isle of Man and Jersey .”

Project Joy is the fact that we would be escaping from the massive undemocratic bureaucracy that is the EU where no-one listens to us despite us being the second largest nett contributor to their funds and not to have to follow the rulings of the ECJ. We would not be funding the CAP which is based upon the costings of the least efficient farmers in the EU.

My passport expires in 2020 and luckily our next planned overseas holiday next spring is to a Non-EU country.

Just look forward to how much better the same journey will be in the future , passport control desks for UK passport holders only . Those 30 new desks probably have a UK sign covered by the eu sign for now .All the others can get in line .

Re: UK Passports valid for more than 6 months to travel?
Yup,
I haven't slept a wink since that was announced. Still, if we see it first we needn't tell them. That'll show them.
Re: UK Passports valid for more than 6 months to travel?
Hudswell
But wasn't the reason behind the Passport changes the government sneaked in without telling any one because of Brexit; well that was what the Government (after they were caught out) were saying on Thursday or don't you believe them?

Re: UK Passports valid for more than 6 months to travel?
They know what? At the end of March next year will the UK wheel stop turning, will the rest of Europe stop delivering goods to us, will we no longer be able to travel outside of Bradford? Come on HiC get a life and please stop your incessant drip-drip of depressingly negative speculation because that is all that it is!
