When we were growing up we lived near the Army firing ranges in Ash Vale. As kids we would use the ranges as our playground, and find all sorts of ordinance. We would occasionally find live stuff too, which was a result for us. I remember one odd bullet was made of silver metal and had a hollow interior. I found one without a hollow interior and my brother threw it away. There was a big bang but fortunately no fire.
Anyway, the most dangerous thing we would ever find on the ranges was gelignite. This would consist of cotton wool explosive with an attached fuse. We all knew it was really dangerous and steered clear of it if we ever found any.
One day, I was exploring, and found some gelignite on my own. Feeling particularly brave, I picked it up by it's fuse, and carried it home, where I showed it to my mum. She made me flush it down the loo and wash my hands. She didn't tell me what it was, just told me never to touch it again.
A few years later the penny finally dropped. If it hasn't yet dropped for you, look at the title of the thread.
