You should contact your Mukhtar's or municipal office. There are strict rules on fridge disposal. If you are replacing it, the vendor of your new one has the legal obligation to dispose of your old one, usually free.

For the OP, it depends where you live, but there are Green Dot recycling centres around where you can take such things for free. There's one at Akoursos, for example, near Peyia, and a soon-to-open one in Moutallos.

Under EU law, the WEE act, the manufacturer of the existing appliance is responsible for collection and disposal of the appliance.

Just call them and quote the WEE act.

This counts for any electrical appliance with a CE mark.

Honest.

Leave it outside your house - when we lived in Yeroskipou anything left on the pavement would vanish within the hour (we lived on a cut through path frequented by Arabic people), now we live in Tala and put the old dishwasher outside with a notice saying it was free and although it took a bit longer to go, someone collected it in a truck, presumably for the scrap value.

Sorry, you are confusing the regulations regarding WEEE and cold equipment (fridges, freezers, coolers, air conditioners i.e. anything that may contain a CFC or HCFC gas either in the cool circuit or in the foam insulation). The directive for the latter is very strict and the appliances must be destroyed in an approved installation which collects and destroys the gases. There is one such installation in Cyprus and all the appliance shops send their fridges et cetera to it for correct disposal. Generally speaking, appliance shops include the recycling charge in the price of new equipment.

Air con in cars come under different regulations but are equally strict.

Anyone found deliberately releasing refrigeration gases or dumping cold equipment is liable to a really swingeing fine!

Hi
Thanks folks for taking the time to reply. The fridge was kept as a back up to the new one but has since stopped working. As its surplus to requirements, hence having to dispose of it ourselves. Will try the Muktar, failing that will take it to the green dot site. Thanks
