Doing what Brits abroad do best...

Post by PhotoLady »

I haven't read the "Letters" page for many months on the Cyprus Mail online newspaper and whilst looking at an article today I had a quick click.

The first letter made me wonder where on earth this estate is that these incidents took place!

The British retire to Cyprus for a quiet life, sitting on their porch they quickly become bored and look for something to occupy their time, and the devil makes work… so they end up turning their attention to their neighbours. That’s what Brits abroad do best.

On our estate, we had one family so fed up of the damage to their car and property they just walked away to live in Sweden. It would take another two years for them to sell their villa. The problem for a while ceased, but it had not gone away. It didn’t take long before boredom crept in again, so another neighbour became the brunt of the unwanted attention.

A car ‘keyed’, stones wedged under an electric gate, dog poop, glass and metal shards left outside the drive, the list went on. New arrivals changed the characteristics of the estate, meetings were held with ‘us & them’. One of these new arrivals thought it a good idea to involve the police. In the fifteen years the police had never visited the estate; suddenly they were called or involved four times in as many months, as no less than eight solicitors’ letters passed between the residents.

You can read the rest of the "letter" here: https://cyprus-mail.com/2018/08/12/doin ... d-do-best/

Such a weird and strange way to air a grievance...

Just because you have not experienced it does not mean it doesn't happen, there are a lot of people out there who go out of their way to alienate people by making unnecessary snide remarks. Sound familiar? Who are you to call someone 'bitter'?

What a sad state of affairs. Awful that people are so unhappy in their own lives that they have to try and spoil it for others.

The picture with the article appears to be a Stock Image of Nicosia. Hopefully that is where the problem is , and that is where it will remain. Hopefully nothing to do with Paphos.

Forgive my ignorance but what's a "Part Timer"?

Have not come across exactly this but when I came to Cyprus I finally discovered some people who really didn't,, have a life ! Especially the part timers

Let's get one thing straight. Any talk about "part timers" or "swallows" or whatever term you want to use is complete and utter bollocks.

You live your life and let other people live theirs. Some of the biggest jerks I have met in Cyprus are permanent expats who have lived here for years.

And I speak as somebody who is a permanent resident with no property in the UK.

If somebody can afford a property in the UK and in Cyprus then good luck to them. So what? There's no need to make spiteful comments. Please bear this in mind Mouse.

What a strange comment mouse. I am a part - timer, although I think swallow is an apt description, and we have fulfilling lives both here and in the UK and I suspect the same applies to all of those who are the same as us. Now that we are retired we spend 6 months here and 6 in the UK, but in the 12+ years that we have been coming here we have never been given the impression that we are lesser beings. Quite the reverse in fact as we have been made extremely welcomed by all those we have met here and have made some good friends, both permanent residents and other swallows. Dare I suggest that it may be you who needs to get a life. If you do, you won't have to amuse yourself by being snide about others who are sharing the Cyprus dream, albeit keeping links with the UK.

I was told many years ago by a Cypriot who had a house on my complex that those of us that shared their time in Cyprus and time in their home countries were known as swallows by the locals. And the locals were sparrows. ( Was still working at the time so only managed a few weeks a year here).

If you can have a half, half kind of life when you're retired I would say it's a cool idea.
When we were living in Cyprus that was an impossible task for us both as we needed to work. Working and living there worked for us and we were better off financially for it in Cyprus.
Since returning to UK in 2016 we now realise we would never go back to living overseas full time but are looking forward to longer holiday stays and being able to explore different places as well as revisiting others we loved in the past before we moved to Cyprus in 2004.

We've returned to Benidorm and Egypt this year (20 years from our last visit and 6 years respectively) but our next destination is all new to us.

We're off to Marrakech and Essaouira, exploring under our own steam. The flights and accomodations have been sourced and purchased at well under £1,000 for 12 nights bed and breakfast in traditional Riads and small sized hotels.

Direct flights is certainly the beauty of flying from UK as we found our wings were well and truly clipped in Cyprus and our ferry plans sunk...

So don't diss the swallows as in reality they may be cuckoos, spending their short lives in many nests and enjoying the time they have in this world.
