Driving Licences and Brexit.

Post by boycott »

Despite all the talk about Brexit and accepting no one (The EU and the British Government especially) has any idea what is or is not going to happen, but what is the situation going to be with regard to driving licences?

Those with a UK/EU driving licence, will it be valid in the EU after March 29 2019?

Those British that have exchanged for a Cy/EU licence will that be valid for use in the UK after March 29 2019?

Since, as you aptly put it " No one has any idea " there are no answers to your questions

I read an article abòut it a few weeks ago and it was indicating that British Driving Licence holders would have to apply for an International driving licence if there is no deal in place. I needed one several years ago to drive in Kazakhstan, the only problem was I had to go the UK to get it and they are only valid for 12 months. I've since changed to a Cypriot licence and the last time I applied for an International licence in Pahos it cost about €40 as opposed to £5 for a British one.

How do you go about getting a Cypriot Driving License?

I have been involved in Politics for most of my working life and I have a friend who is actually on the EU negotiating team and I can assure you that there are many very intelligent and diligent negotiators on both the EU and the UK teams. Many, many specifics such as driving licenses have been discussed and agreed should we leave with a deal.Should we not then the UK will be trading under WTO terms and the UK will still prosper.
The ordinary person really has no idea about what takes place and only wastes their precious breath rallying against what will be.Remember that song from the 50's - Que sera sera what will be will be?

Dominic you can change your UK license to an EU Cypriot one at the Department of Transport however as I say you exchange it.You cannot retain your UK one as well.

I'm not rallying (as you say) about anything, just repeating what the article stated. Like you I have no idea what will happen after Brexit though a " No deal Brexit" does look on the cards according to Liam Fox so I don't have your rose tinted view of the outcome.
If I remember correctly we had to apply for a bail bond (green card) before we could drive on the continent.

I changed mine at the Citizens Advice in Butchers Boy Street. They also have an advice centre in the Post Office. Cost is €40, my wife changed hers last week, she had an old Cypriot paper one and has changed it to the new id type. It takes three weeks.

Rules must have changed then in the last two years.
It used to be that you could only change from a UK licence, to a Cypriot one, at the Ministry of Transport offices..

I have no doubt that it can be done, because people do lose their UK licence.. But I would have thought that when the UK issue a second licence, that they would on their computer system, cancel the first one.
So, although you would still have possession of the first licence it will in effect be null and void...

Yes; duff information from me. I had the old Cypriot paper licence which I got from the MOT just prior to my UK licence expiring. I changed the Cypriot paper licence at the Citizens Advice to the EU type licence. Sorry about that. I was told the UK licence is sent back to Swansea.

Termites Dream wrote: Tue Aug 07, 2018 6:44 am A cheeky question but....Can you get a second UK License by claiming the first is lost and exchange the second UK License for a Cypriot one and therefore have one for each country.
Yes, you can, I did this when I came to Cyprus 26 years ago. The numbers & info on both licences
are exactly the same, in fact the only difference is one of them has the word ‘duplicate ‘ written in a box. I still possess both Cypriot & British driving licences😁😁

But if you get TWO UK licences, because you have had a replacement for one that was 'lost', then only one will be taken from you and sent to the UK.. ;-)

And if you have an accident whilst driving in the UK on a "cancelled" license then I would assume you would be committing a serious offence.

This business of acquiring a Cypriot driving licence seems a little confusing as people recount their experiences from recent and not so recent times. Friends of mine decided to change from UK to Cypriot licences (as they had been renewing their licences by pretending to live at their son’s house) and spent a confusing time at the DOT. Do I now understand you can exchange your licence at the Citizens’ Office? My UK driving licence expires in two years when I am 67. If it is straightforward to exchange, I may as well do it now in Polis.

No, you need to visit the DOT, as far as I am aware.

My wife and I did back in 2015 when we exchanged ours and we did it at the Road Transport Dept just off the Polis Road opposite SportsDirect. It may have changed so that you can now do it at one the CSC's but I don't know.

For information, I have also included a link below which explains the regulations regarding driving licence renewal and exchange in the EU ……… if you are driving on 2 European licences at the same time then you are driving illegally!
