Special defence tax
Special defence tax
Does anybody know if we can apply for the special defence tax exemption on the internet as in previous years we have filled in an exemption form and handed it in with our tax return . Thanks for any advice in advance. Lefkes.
Re: Special defence tax
I have pension income only, and just don't pay it. I haven't filled in a form or anything, and the tax office are happy with this.
Re: Special defence tax
Thank you Josef. I have filled in my 2017 tax return and the taxisnet calculated I have quite a lot of defence tax to pay ,in previous years I have filled in a objection form and handed it in to the tax office .This year as we are having to do our tax return on line I assume the objection form also has to be done on line. As I have lived here less than 17 years I should have no special defence tax to pay Lefkes.

It is my understanding that if you have been ordinarily resident in Cyprus for less than 17 years you are exempt from the Special Defence Tax and therefore you don't enter anything in your tax return.
Re: Special defence tax
You need to fill in a T38. Go to the tax office, fill in the appropriate form and you then have to wait for approval when they then issue you with a life certificate which you enter on the SDC on the online tax form. You are NOT exempt until you have the life certificate. Your seventeen years are counted from the year you moved to Cyprus. So, for instance, if you moved here in October 2009, your first year will be from January 2009 to 2025. After that you will be liable for SDC. Remember it only started in July 2015. We found out when we asked for exemption forms in June 2015, to find this year when we went for help, that they were the wrong forms, so all the tax forms that have been done manual!y claiming exemption count for nothing! We did manage to get exemption this year even though we didn't have the certificate. Complicated. You cannot just ignore it! It will come back and bite you on the rear!

Re: Special defence tax
I have just been to the tax office to get the T-38 form, which you now have to get on line together with form TD38QA. I need a copy of my father's birth certificate or an affidavit of his place of birth. He's been dead for over 40 years and I haven't got any papers left of him. Has anyone else come across this?
Re: Special defence tax
You need to go in and explain! We were told the same but our parents would be over 120 years old! They let it go.

Pff, thanks very much for your quick reply. I had lost the wil to live when I was told I needed his birth certificate.
