Polemi is one of the larger outlying villages.. But I have not seen any recycling bins

Morning all.
Some friends of our's, before returning to the UK (they regarded themselves as very "Green") they followed a recycling truck all the way to the old dumping ground that was on the way to the airport, all the separated items just got tipped into the same landfill, just a waste of peoples time to sort through there own home garbage, I sincerely hope any new initiative works better than the last try, especially regarding waste plastics, this has become the world's nightmare.
Talking of "Green Dot" I see no improvements to the actual state of the Pafos area, rubbish all over the place, it never gets cleaned away, we have four what looks like old used tractor tyers near a Green refuse bin, they have been there for far too long, our Mukhtar seems not to care as he drives past this mess every day. Cyprus has always been scruffy regarding rubbish and the like, let's all hope things improve, being a tad cynical I will believe it when it happens.

One problem they have is what to do with the stuff once it has been recycled. In the UK it gets converted to park benches and decking in country parks. In Cyprus, they haven't got that far yet. Whether it's the warmer climate or something else I don't know, but the recycling end product doesn't yet have a market. If I recall correctly, they were having to get special permission to let them bury it over Nicosia way.
However, assuming they get a proper recycling workflow sorted out one day, anything that encourages all of us to sort out our rubbish is a good thing.
And don't forget where your green points are!

We've gotten into the habit of using them regularly. So if we are going towards Polis or Paphos, we load up a car full of crap and drop it off on the way. If we do it that way, their distance from Polemi becomes irrelevent, and we can reward ourselves with a nice swim afterwards.

Habit forming I guess. So that when they can do something with it all we are already sorting it out properly.
Besides, there is only a certain amount of things that can be done with any recycled goods. The real problem is excessive packaging in the first place. Sorting out your plastics does at least make you aware of how much rubbish you are generating.

But it would be much better if the villages had a bin for the different recyclable materials..

'The real problem is excessive packaging'... nail on the head Dominic. Much more focus needs to be put on this. Due to recent campaigns I am much more aware of the serious effects of plastics on the environment and wasteful packaging in general. We should be thankful to all of those who campaign passionately and tirelessly to bring such issues to our attention and which ultimate benefit us all.

Now we no longer get free plastic carrier bags from shops with everything we buy, at least it encourages people to retain enough bags for their shopping needs! I have got over part of my Intial problem with forgetting to take a bag with me, by now keeping a selection of carriers in the car boot! At least I can get them from the boot if I forget to take some into the shop...
When I shop for fruit and veggies, I try to buy from boxes without any plastic sale packaging. But it annoys me that Lidl in particular often sells certain things like tomatoes and potatoes pre packed in polythene. They could start using recyclable materials much as strong paper sacks for potatoes, and strong cellophane bags for tomatoes...They are now usings a net to prepack lemons which is better.
According to a BBC programme the worst type of plastic which is impossible to recycle are the black plastic trays which are used for frozen meals, and may be those for prepackaged meat.
