Looks nice except that its all overshadowed by these two vast new blocks of flats..12 stories and a peculiar lozenge shape, high they will dwarf every other building , the skyline previously comprised of buildings 3 or 4 stories high, will be changed for ever.

Is this good or bad?

Yioula has a point. It’s unfortunately true that the success of the Mall has certainly led to the situation in Ktima. Lots of empty shops there. It can’t really compete with the facilities offered by the Mall. Such as free covered parking, a climate controlled interior leading to more convenient and comfortable shopping, plus handy fast food outlets, though Ktima does have cafes dotted about. With Ktima, its often harder to find a free car parking space as many are taken up by shop and office workers and most of the car parks have meters. You have to walk whatever the weather to reach the shops. Now the variety of shops has decreased, and often the streets are fairly empty of shoppers, the mayor has decreed that there be no protruding shop signs and no sun awnings, unless they be umbrellas in dull beige. There are currently no decent public toilets. Even the dentist near th market was told to remove their helpful sign in the street. Whatever HIC says. I think tha Ktima has lost much of what character it had in the recent modernisation.

This has just been published now as well:

Paphos Municipality has given the green light to two 20 storey high rises in the SODAP area, near the Aloe Hotel.
The decision was taken by majority by the municipality’s town planning committee. The committee rejected an application for the construction of two 12 storey buildings near Paphos hospital, and based on the studies of the technical services approved an eight storey and a five storey building on site instead.
Yesterday’s decision marks Paphos entry into the age of high rises. Official said that developers of the two 20 storey buildings had agreed to create  a significant green area as well as public parking which will upgrade the town.
“Rather than spreading a forest of cement in an area of 10,000 square metres it is better to have a building of 15-20 storeys and for the rest of the area to be green,” one official told philenews.

Lincoln, I don't know why but you are breaking your quotes recently, so that your reply is merging with the text from the person you are quoting. Is this intentional?

The old Orphanides Mall should have been a goer but its success was very much tied in with Orphanides Supermarket as otherwise there were only spaces for a handful of small shops.
Initially it seemed to be a success and it must have been the largest supermarket then in Paphos. Then suddenly over a period of a few months its stock started to dwindle and wasn’t being replaced by fresh new stock. Then the numbers of shoppers visiting dropped and then it started closing down while trying to sell off remaining stuff at reduced prices.
The small shops closed and you know the rest.
It was a pity it went as the building was well designed and convenient with lots of parking some undercover. Even a travellator to take the shopping carts to,and from the store...which was all on one level, on the floor above! It would have been ideal for a larger Alpha Mega!

Lloyd I think it was 4 million in a suitcase and believe it was a rumour!
