Salary for a family of two for a decent lifestyle in Paphos Cyprus

Post by taureanrules »

Hello,
I am planning to move to Cyprus with my wife for a better quality of life. Currently I have an job offer in hand in Kato Paphos for a monthly gross renumeration of EUR 3300. Is this good enough for a family of two?
My job location is near the harbour and hence will be looking for a 1 bedroom near there. Internet (8-10 Mbps) is absolutely essential for me. Will be looking to buy a car post 2-3 months of moving. Though that is not the priority now.
I have searched everywhere on internet, but received no definite answers to whether EUR 3300 is good enough.
All and every inputs will be helpful and appreciated.
Thanks!

I would say that you will have a very comfortable lifestyle on that salary. Just make sure your salary is in writing and you have a legal binding contract of employment before you upsticks. Employers here have a reputation for backtracking on their word or not paying salaries every month. Perhaps get a lawyer who is on the British High Commissioner list of lawyers to check any contract of employment.

I would say 3300 is more than enough to fund a comfortable lifestyle. Individuals don't pay tax on income less than 19500, and most people don't pay tax as a result, so you can see 3300 is a good income.

I wouldn't try for an apartment too near the harbour as it would be more expensive, and possibly subject to noise in the summer. Try for something further away, but on a regular bus route.

The internet speed you are looking for is available everywhere in Paphos.

Finally, I echo the comments about employment contracts. There is little in the way of effective security of employment here, such as existing in the UK.

Internet is not an issue. We live in Polemi (a village 20 minutes out of Paphos), and I need decent internet access for all my work. It is not a problem at all. With regards to the money, that is plenty.

Oh and welcome to the forum. :)

Yes,defintely take Anarita John,s advice, employment here is fraught with people not getting paid after their months work, especially young people and there,s nowt you can do about it.You can always take them to court,it would only take between 5 to 10 years.

He isn't joking about the courts taking 5 - 10 years, either.

Don't get us all wrong. Living in Cyprus can be fabulous. Just keep your eyes open.

I would come by yourself first, start working, make sure the job, is Kosher, then bring the family over..... just seen its just the two of you, but my advice still stands,

There are immigrants from the UK here who live on old age pensions. I know an old widow whose only income is a state pension of about €350. Okay, she has no rent to pay, she keeps chickens in her yard, potters as well as she can in a small veggie garden and, in the Cyprus tradition, she is looked after by the villagers bringing her food. From time to time, she brings us a couple of eggs or veggies, when her own garden over-produces.

We are lucky in that we chose a village which still has a few Cypriots of the old style, always generous to a T, always ready to help. Unfortunately, this tradition has mostly died out in the towns and larger villages. Notwithstanding, in Larnaca, I recently stumbled in the street and, within seconds, three people were around me helping me up, even though there was no damage done.

Sorry to hijack the thread away from living costs but I mention this to say that living in a village is not the same as living in town.

Well spotted young Trev! Must admit, I thought it a weird post too, offering work in Stevenage to the OP. I'm sure Dominic will be along soon to remove it.
