Live-in Carer needed

Post by sued51 »

I am well aware that the usual procedure for obtaining a live in carer is to go through a registered agency and I have done this, however, they have no one suitable and available at the moment and I just wondered if anyone on here knew of any available Sri Lankan or Filipino carers who are looking for another position? Providing they have release papers I don't think there is a problem with them moving elsewhere and I am happy to do whatever paperwork necessary. Please pm me if you can help

Many Thanks

I´ve repeatedly seen adverts of potential carers in the Cyprus-mail loooking for jobs and/or sponsors. Maybe worth spending a €.
Could you elaborate on the procedure to get a carer? I wasn´t aware that there are specific agencies you have to use.

These were often ads from jobseekers who weren´t tied to a specific district (or at least they didn´t mention it). Sometimes they are still in their home countries and are looking for someone to sponsor their residence permit.

To have a Sri Lankan or Filipino maid/carer legally, you have to go through an agency who arranges their flights, work/residence permits, health checks/insurance etc and the carer/maid is in a contract working for a specific family. if things don't work out the contract may be cancelled by either side, but the agency then has to find the carer/maid another position and a new contract or they must leave the island within a month.

I'm sure this doesn't always happen and I have seen the adverts in the Paphos Post - strangely I have noticed the same advert in several editions, so they are probably put in on behalf of a friend of someone already here to try to persuade someone to sponsor them as has already been suggested.

I have no wish to employ anyone illegally, but just thought it was worth a try asking on here in case someone knew of a case where perhaps an elderly person had recently passed away leaving an experienced carer looking for another position.

It isn't a legal requirement to use an agency, although it is obviously easier if you do.

The correct term for what you call a maid/carer is Domestic Worker. If you use this term people will better understand what you mean.

My suggestion is to approach existing Domestic Workers who work in your area, and ask them. They will sometimes have relatives looking for position here, or know of someone who is trying to find a position before becoming illegal or being made to leave the island. They can be very knowledgeable so don't assume they know nothing because they are just Domestic Workers (not that you have suggested this). I know Domestic Workers who were nurses, midwives, bookkeepers, and pharmacists when they were in their own country. A sad commentary on inequalities across the world.

You cannot just employ a person from Philippines, Sri Lanka, Vietnam etc just because you would like one. You have to meet the criteria set down by the government. I know this because I was initially told "No". My case had to go to the Interior Minister for approval. I have a medical condition that was not on their list.

What are the criteria? Do you have a link? Do you need to have been a resident for at least 5 years?

Thanks. Do you also know how much the bank guarantee mentioned in that document must be for?

According to the Cyprus Mail today, guarantees may soon be returned under the law.
