Going green from tomorrow in Papantoniou.

Post by Minerva »

Papantoniou have stated that plastic bags will be charged at 6 cents each from tomorrow, 1st July. They have different 'woven bags' for sale at 59 cents [usual price 99cents]. Saw many people with their own bags today in Polis. :D :D

Just can’t imagine the Cypriotsbringing their own bags to the shops. We’ve had warning that this is going to happen but I’ve not seen any evidence of the stores encouraging customers to cut down on the plastic.

Lidl have been charging for bags for years, and Ikagora have been charging for a little while...
It will be interesting to see the Cypriot reaction though.

I think the Cypriots will manage just the same as everyone else does.
Money is a great incentive & it always will be.

Thank you Austin 7 - exactly my thinking

I never needed a bag when shopping at Lidl's. From the trolley straight into the boot of the car, where a washing basket is waiting to be filled. For the cool and frozen stuff I have a freezer box with cooling elements in the car as well. By the way: the problem with the plastic rubbish is not the few bags one needs to carry things into the car. Much larger concern is that nearly every food is packed and sealed in plastic containers and this is what adds up a lot. Cut meat, cut cheese, water,.... and all the vegis and fruits you buy have to be separated in nylon bags or plastic containers. Every 2 weeks I have to empty two XXL bin liner with plastic stuff to the recycling point, 5 km away and I am a single house hold!!! AND I am not sure what happens with the container contents when they empty them to be transported to....a landfill? recycling plant? exporting to other countries. There should be EU money available to built proper plants near the four cities of Cyprus...

We've been back in UK now for just over 2 years and the only time we remember to take any bags for shopping is when we go to Morrisons.
Any other time, we completely forget as we're so used to being given one every time no matter what you buy when in Cyprus!
We've tried keeping some in the car but we don't remember to take them out of the boot!

I started to keep my LIDL bags in a box in the boot of my car somewhile ago. I have now added bags from all the shops which I visit regularly. I also have a large cool bag which I put a frozen ice brick in for perishables. Provided I remember to take the right bags from the car to the store, all shoukd be fine!

Nice and calm in Pap’s this a.m., altho’ when it gets hot and busy, there could be an outbreak of “Bag-rage”…….

Couldn't believe it in Paps on Saturday. Had my 2 reusable bags and was packing as fast as I could, but not fast enough to prevent the helper filling up a plastic bag with the rest of my stuff. Unfortunately, I kept the queue waiting whilst I took them out of the plastic and put them in the reusable bags! So this may be an issue for the future.

Off to UK next Monday so will replace my pretty shabby reusable bags!!
