Which email provider
Which email provider
Hi
Due to a consistently poor internet signal, I have decided after 12 years of using Cyta to cancel and now have another internet provider.
Trouble is I now need to get a new email address.
I have looked through a lot of friends emails and the trend is towards Gmail, some Yahoo and a few Google.
I remember some years back about one of these providers getting hacked and as I obviously want a safe email address does anybody have any recommendations?
Thanks

Re: Which email provider
I have used Gmail for many years now and I am very happy with it. I currently have 7,660 emails and I am only using 25% of my allowance. It is fully searchable, and you can even 'grab back' an email that you have sent to alter it...
I have downloaded a Gmail notifier and the emblem sits at the top right of my screen, and alerts me with a sound and change in colour when an email comes in.. It also shows me how many emails are waiting to be read

Re: Which email provider
Either GMail or Outlook (used to be hotmail) will do you fine. I definitely wouldn't go with a custom email address. A lot of ISPs routinely block email from smaller domains unless the domain is configured 100% properly.
With GMail or Outlook you are effectively set up for life. It will be with you no matter what your ISP is.

Re: Which email provider
Hi, I use gmail (google) as my main email and ymail (yahoo) as a backup, they are each the recovery email address for the other, and I find it works really well, I have used these for several years in the UK and here, and of course they are completely independent of isp.

As Dominic says it does not matter about your computer or your internet supplier, Gmail is with you for life. it is not on your computer ..

Re: Which email provider
Do an email address with Yahoo as well.
Then you can set up a recovery address with both, so if you have a problem you can use both for recovery.
IE use Gmail for recovery of Yahoo and Yahoo for recovery of Gmail.
Just in case things go wrong!

Re: Which email provider
I've been using a personal address in the style of initials@name.eu for donkey's years. It costs me €6/year. This is a legacy from when I was working and emails with addresses ending in yahoo, gmail, hotmail etc. were often ignored by companies, especially here in Cyprus. Many companies have filters on their inbox sorters that class these automatically as spam or as low priority. Perhaps less so now, but 10 years ago, it was better to have an address ending in [email protected] (or .co.uk, .eu, .cy etc.). IOW, spam filters automatically increase the risk of a message not being read if they see the popular domain names.
Re: Which email provider
Thanks for that, but over the last 12 years I have found that even when using Cytanet emails on the whole have been ignored by Cypriot companies, and I end up having to telephone, it seems that fax is still preferred over email also.

Re: Which email provider
Sadly, HiC is quite right. eMail is not recognised in Cyprus as the business tool it is in the UK.
Personal addresses are now very much on the way out in Cyprus.A friend of ours came to visit, and his email wouldn't work when using our Cyta connection. Cyta blocked outgoing mail. He had to connect via his phone and send it that way.
This is one of the reasons a lot of Cypriot companies use Cyta email addresses. I was surprised when I got here, but soon found out the hard way why this was the case. You wouldn't believe how many bells and whistles I had to jump through to get the paphoslife.com mail domain working properly in Cyprus.

Re: Which email provider
A wise choice in my opinion.
I've never heard of anyone having their gmail hacked or compromised whereas I have with hotmail and yahoo.

Re: Which email provider
I have always kept my options open. I have a gmail, hotmail and BT account. When in Cyprus I had a Cyta account too. Sounds a bit of a chew but, it's not really.
I keep my personal stuff to one, business stuff to another and finally 'potential' junk stuff to the latter.
