New vehicle registration law will favour early birds

Post by galexinda »

A new bill is the works that would change how Cypriots pay for their vehicle registration, but also how much road tax they pay depending on how soon they take care of their bill.

Vehicle owners who pay by January 15 will get a 20% discount, while those paying between January 16 and 31 will be able to save 15%.

Those paying on or after February 1 but no later than March 10 will pay the full price, while vehicle owners paying after March 10 will be assessed both a €10 fee and a 10% charge of the annual amount.

Registration periods that are issued quarterly and semi-annually will be discontinued under the new law.

The legislation is expected to be drafted and voted into law in September.

Yes I read this, and it makes good sense, we always pay on the day so it could save us 40% with two small motors, hope they do make these changes.

Sorry, but having two motors at 20% each does not mean you save 40%!

If each was €100 then each would be €80 i.e. €160 instead of €200 for both. This is still a discount of 20% on the total.

So will you be penalised for paying "late" if your car is SORNed? As we don't return here till mid April we now longer pay the road tax at the beginning of the year. How will that work out?

The way I see it is on the total bill I save 20% road tax and 20% road tax on the other vehicle, all in all very happy if this comes to pass.

Ratty you can pay on line I believe.

I do pay online Jim before we arrive but I will not be paying until April, after the date where the penalty will kick in. I pay till the end of June, 3 months, as we go back to the UK. This 6 month payment period is being discontinued so I suppose I will have to pay till the end of the year and apply for a refund.

I also do this again in October till December for those 3 months. I was asking if there was anyore information about how the new rules would affect SORNed cars.

Great idea for us living here as I always pay in January as do most that I know & it's about time we are being rewarded for doing this.

This proposal is a more logical one than that used a few years ago in the middle of the financial crisis. Then non-payers by the end date for payment were offered a discount to pay.

Guess what happened the next year. No-one paid in anticipation of getting a similar discount.
