Now the Queen has reached her Sapphire Jubilee should she abdicate?
Yes in favour of Prince Charles
Yes but only if the succession skips to Prince William
No, she is Queen until she dies
The Monarchy should be abolished on her death
The Monarchy should be abolished immediately

Re: Poll:- Sapphire Jubilee
Had there been an option "No, unless she wants to" I would have voted for that.

Yes the Queen has done an amazing job, surely she deserves a rest, however I would also agree with Dominic.
I just dread the thought of Charles and Camilla as King and Queen.

I feel sure that Charles will not want to relinquish his right to become monarch after the Queen dies, but he really should as I don't think he will have too much support from the populace!

Re: Poll:- Sapphire Jubilee
Her Majesty will not abdicate - she saw and was part of the consequences caused by Edward the 8th's abdication. Likewise on her 21st birthday she pledged her service to the country for the remainder of her life be it long or short. There is the possibility of a Regency being set up should Her Majesty be at any point unfit (due to illness) to carry on her constitutional duties and to some extent at this moment in time she is passing some of her duties to other members of the Royal family. When the time does come (and long may it be) Prince Charles will succeed to the throne as is the constitutional method - we do not get to choose who the Monarch will or should be - it is heredity. Skipping generations is not an option thankfully.
For an alternative abolish the Monarchy and elect a President - perish the thought if todays choices are anything to go by. Be careful what you wish for.

Excellent post Rita. Much as I'd love the Queen to take a well-deserved rest, and enjoy the twilight of her life, I can't see her abdicating either. She has been exemplary in the role. A very tough act to follow.Rita Sherry wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2017 7:08 pm Her Majesty will not abdicate - she saw and was part of the consequences caused by Edward the 8th's abdication.
