Not often that CNN reports prominently about Cyprus, but here we go:

(is that short enough :?: )

Used the old airport several times in the 1950s. The first time (1952) it was still quite primitive, largely run by the RAF but with BEA taking care of the civil side with DC3s but there were great improvements by 1956 using, I think, the Britannia and a real terminal (small).

One of our sons-in-law is a photographer and, in 2014, he worked for Reuters and went into the Green Line area on an assignment:

what a beautiful airliner the TRIDENT was and a great shame than an airport can just be left to rot........shame on all Cypriots allowing this to continue for so long. the answer is within reach but they just won't work it out.

Yes Mike, it was a nice plane. Used it many times to fly from FFM to Nicosia, first time 1970. Sometimes you needed a stopover on the way back at Athens, when they could not fill up the plane as in August many times it was more than 40c and the runway too short and no wind.

"Used it many times to fly from FFM to Nicosia,"

Don't recall any flights from Minnesota into Lefkosia!

ronk, I am ever so sorry not using the IATA code (FRA) in my earlier post. But being German, perhaps I know that the most common abbreviation for Frankfurt am Main was and is still FFM. (to differentiate from Frankfurt/Oder) So before you criticise you should be sure... :)
Wikipedia: The common abbreviation for the name of the city is "FFM". Also in use is "FRA", the IATA code for Frankfurt Airport.
