Weather Variations

Post by PolemIan »

One of the things that I like about living here, is the sheer variation, or at least how noticeable it is, in the weather. Working in the City fort years for example, and living in suburbs, generally when it's persisting down, because you're so enclosed by tall buildings and other large structures, it kind of feels lie it's raining everywhere, though obviously every raincloud has a boundary!

Over here though, with everything being so open and the land so variable, the boundaries of weather and microclimate caused by changes in topography and land use, make variances so much more visible - the comments between Dominic, Trev and myself about the rain in Polemi on Wednesday being a good example - and I can see both their houses from here!

Yesterday was classic, I was on our patio and I could actually hear the rain battering down on the trees on the other side of the valley from us - Polemi is kind of bowl shaped, Dom lives in the flatter part, known as Kangelia, whereas Trev and I are on opposite upslopes if that makes sense. We set off down the track to the village driving along a bone dry track to see a wall of rain and flooded track about 150m ahead of us. Battering down in the centre of the village, bone dry by the Esso station and I thought I saw Noah somewhere between Tsada and Tremithousa - the first time I've ever considered pulling over to stay safe. Rocks all over the main road near the Department of Transport office and just a bit damp in the Papantoniou car park. Meanwhile Rock FM are broadcasting from a gloriously sunny Latchi. Love it.

More thunder and lightening forecast for our general area this lunchtime / afternoon. Coming from the direction of Amargetti. Not necessarily any rain though.. We have found some great calming capsules for the dog called Kalm Vet... Brilliant..

It's weird. Our bunny seems to take it all in his stride. He sat out in his run yesterday through a storm, under various covers, watching the rain quite happily.

They sound just what we need for our dog. Can you let me know where you got them please?

Yep ours came from D&N vets. €20 for 60 capsules. Only one a day for a dog up to around 11 or 12 kilo. We gave our dog one at the start of the thunder and he went to bed and was in 'happy land' ie a bit sleepy. But no whining or shaking with fear..

I checked what my Alsatian was doing after a very noisy thunder yesterday lunchtime. Obviously she liked the noise from water running down from the roof into a water barrel, as she was deep asleep in her dog house and I could see only her head hanging out.... Obviously bulletproof.

Went out 2 hours ago and it was dry. Came back, and the garden is now flooded in places! The pool is now full to the brim again as well.

I am certainly becoming more in a believer of the forecasts of

It takes a little work to see if it will thunder tomorrow. But it does show thunderstorms in the airport to Amargetti region early tomorrow afternoon.

Around 2pm the sky was black behind us over the hills towards Kili. I head lots of rumbles of thunder. No rain here though as the storm was probably heading for Stroumbi and Kathikas.
These storms are certainly very localised.

We were inundated with Thunder, Lightning and Rain in Theletra on Saturday - for hours. Power cut all afternoon. Sparks and noises from the plugs although no electricity. Our neighbours were the same. Pool was almost overflowing. Ceilings leaks in our lounge from our upstairs Patio. When over, I contacted the Elec. Board who said Theletra had been repaired. I told them we were still off so they said they would send an engineer - within the hour we were back on - the Elec. Board phoned to check we were OK. Only casualty was our ceiling fan which had to have the Remote Control replaced. Please never again. x

It certainly was extremely heavy rain, without a doubt. We only on flat roof covering around 14 sq mts.
I try to give it a coat of sealer every year, to make sure it doesn't leak. I am very glad that I refused the builder permission to put 4 drain hoes through the roof... It all drains to an outside gutter :-)
