Medical card for treatment at General Hosp.

Could someone tell me if I need some kind of medical card before accessing treatment at the General Hospital in Paphos please. I already have a European Health Insurance Card. Although not "resident" here I tend to spend about 6 months on average in Cyprus. Thanks. Dave

Strictly speaking I believe you should have registered here... That would have enabled you to obtain a medical card.. But if you claim to be a holiday maker then your EHIC card should allow you to register for treatment at the Hospital registration desk...

I think you can only register if you stay for over 12 weeks in one stay, if like me you travel back and forth you have to use your UK health card or go privately.

One condition that you should fulfil to be able to get regular (as opposed to emergency) treatment at the General Hospital is to be in receipt of a UK State Pension. As has been previously posted you should also be a resident.

Found this on the NHS England website, which may be of use to some. It states that you CAN access public hospitals for pre-existing health issues, not just for emergency. It also covers routine maternity care, provided you aren't using the system to give birth. Of course, this advice is for holiday makers - different rules entirely for residents. I suspect Dr B spreads his 6 months in Cyprus, over the year, which I also do, therefore isn't resident. Obviously, travel insurance is crucial too, probably more so after March next year.

On the same web page you should also read the section on charges, which are not the same as for a qualified resident.
