Today's not nice surprice: Viper (pic)

Just an hour ago my landlord came to the gate with this poisonous viper, which was looking for food in his turkey enclosure. Of course he killed it, but on the other hand it would worry me knowing that if the snake comes close to my dog there would be trouble ( not for the snake)....
Just be aware, as these ones are around a lot this time of the year, typical the fat short body, the thin tail, and the triangle shape of the head.

The viper in your picture looks quite a slim line one, The ones which I have seen in previous years tend to be much thicker in their bodies which taper very quickly to a thin tail. Are snakes thinner immediately after a winter spent hibernating?
I have been told that they are inclined to be more aggressive to humans if disturbed in the
month of May as this is their mating season....

Today in Polemi one of the men of the village was showing a dead viper to his mates in the coffee shop.
He held it by the end of it's tail and had to hold his arm up to stop it dragging on the floor. So it would have been about 6fot long.

Everything one needs to know from a scientific point of view, But interestingly no mention is made about the toxicity of the venom should one be unlucky enough to be bitten by it and the need for anti venom to be administerd which means a trip straight to the nearest state hospital....

I think this one today had no food for a couple of days, that's why it( he ) was hunting in the landlords turkey farm. Quite certainly a male one as it was only just above 1 m long. But the shape was typical.....

We cut our trees about 18 inches before the bottom which gives us a chance to see if anything underneath, yes, we do get careless and stick our hands in leaves often, but won't do it again for a few more weeks after reading this.

A bit of a shock.
