That does surprise me, I thought it was never too late to give up.

My recently deceased dad gave up smoking 35 years ago and ended up on a oxygen machine at home and then liquid oxygen in his final months and the consultant looking after him during his final months told me that if he had not given up smoking 35 years ago he would probably be in better health than he was now, The reason being that the dormant tar in his lungs had solidified in the bottom of his lungs and caused the cancer which was gradually moving up his lungs and killing off the amount of breathing space he had left until not sufficient left to feed his blood and brain and he said this would not have happened if he had continued smoking every day – But my opinion on this is maybe it would have caused other issues that would have still got him early anyway – cigarettes are definitely a killer one way or another.

All that I can say is that giving up has given me a new lease of life. Persistent cough has gone, blocked sinus's for months on end much better and can now breathe through my nose. Research recently funded by the British Heart Foundation shows that even giving up later in life is beneficial. Smoking and drinking caused my illnesses. Having a 5x heart bypass has given me a second chance so I do not want to mess it up by continuing to harden arteries in the heart and raising blood pressure every time I lite a ciggie.

When you are in the cardiac care unit and then three weeks in hospital in a heart and chest ward plus another two weeks in a specialist heart and chest hospital for the bypass operation, you have to give up smoking. Rosemary refused point blank to give me any ciggies or even vapes and the hospital and grounds were strictly no smoking, which was enforced.
I was on nebulizers for four weeks before the op.

People who were still smokers when they had the op were in far more pain afterwards than me. My lungs had just over three weeks to recover and the doctors told me that had made a difference to my recovery rate and comfort. I was given patches and a nicotine inhaler which really helped me and also the knowledge of not being able to have a ciggie in hospital.

I still love the smell of ciggies. I dream of the things regularly and would love to smoke one, but I am not going to.

Sorry Al this has gone off topic. Try to get fit for your next visit. Lots of people on here were worried when you did not post during your holiday.

Back on topic. Our favourite taverna down at the harbour is Ma Bianca. Their food is delicious and Aresti from Elean originally recommended it to us. However, for you Al, it will probably be closed in the evening. They also sell Illey coffee.
