Grrrrrrrrrr,my biggest pet hate of all time, grrrrrrrrrr, being served a full piping hot English breakfast on a......COLD plate.
So you have to eat it in the order of which item goes cold the soonest.. My suggestion is the egg, then the bacon then the beans, then the tomatoe, followed by the sausage,,(and not everyones favourite) the black pudding. The toast? in between all of the above'

Bon appetit,,,that is if you have not choked yourself in having to scoff it down before the food reaches the cold plate temperature!!!

Another place we have been for an English Breakfast is the Nereus Hotel in Paphos.. You have to pay €5 at the reception, but then you can eat as much as you like.. Cereals, fruit juices, cold meats, hot breakfast items, toast, tea, coffee, and fruit. It is all on a help yourself basis.. They start clearing away shortly before 10am

That's an excellent tip, Trev! From my recent experience with buffet brekky at the Veronica, you need an eagle eye on what the chef is up to on the buffet hot trays.

I started with fresh slices of orange, then cornflakes with cold milk. Would then look at the fried eggs and fried bacon trays. If they looked tired, hard and dismal, then I'd just sit down and wait a bit, with a cup of tea.. In minutes, the chef would be out there sliding newly cooked bacon 'n fried eggs out.

THAT's when I dived in for my full English brekky, eggs 'n bacon, with beans, mushrooms, fried bread and sausage, yum yum! Strangley, they didn't offer cooked tomatoes, though...

It is quite a while since I was last there, but I doubt it was on a hot plate.. But neither would it be a stone cold one, this is Cyprus and cold is not really in the vocabulary.. You can help yourself as may times as you want so you have no need to pile the plate up :-)

Most 3* hotels and above have hot dinner plates for the buffet queue in a kind of heated spring-loaded covered container, for the evening meal buffet.

Would it not be simple to add this vital feature for buffet breakfast too, I ask?

Ive been to many Cypriot houses for food, and not once have they heated the plate, not a Cypriot thing, but if its an issue with you, why not just ask the waiter when you order, that you would like a hot plate, problem solved?

That's a difficult call, WHL, when the two or three 'waiters' are only in the buffet breakfast dining room in order to clear away dirty crockery and cutlery, then prepare the table for later arrivals.

They are not serving to your table, as you imply. It's a help yourself buffet scenario... One can always grab a small breakfast plate which is at room temperature) then pop it on top of a covered steamer to warm up a bit. As Trev says, dish up small on a warm(ish) plate, then go back as often as your appetite allows you...

Sorry, WHL, but I was more replying to Trev's excellent idea of a slap-up 'eat as much as you like' hotel buffet breakfast for €5

I think we need to find out what the hotel buffet brekkies actually make their 'bacon' out of, though... Is it factory-formed ham, I wonder? Definately NOT bacon! And their sausages? I tried a bite of one, and the rest went to the cats on my way out to the garden afterwards, never to be tried again...

At this juncture, it's time to relate a funny breakfast story from my stay at the Veronica Hotel. It shows how easy it is to misjudge other residents. Lots of guests from Russia, including a middle-aged lady and her elderly Mother, for example.

One morning, I was a bit late on parade for breakfast, but doing the best I could, before staff began to pack everything away. Noticed the two Russian ladies going around all the tables, scraping people's leftover bacon, ham, sausage, etc onto a plate.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing !!! First impression, was that these two canny ladies were on B&B and were now packing their lunch into their handbags (as reported on TripAdvisor).

I was ashamed at my first impressions, I must admit... These two lovely Russian ladies were actually gathering leftover food (that would otherwise have been rubbished by staff ten minutes later) and feeding the ten resident hotel cats, as they left via the rear Pool entrance / exit.

Fair play to them, and shame on me for assuming the worst about them...
