The Demise of Orphanides

I just came across this little album - May 2013 when we took our last visit to the big Orphanides supermarket by the New Port Road roundabout in Limassol.

I felt so sorry for the staff, losing their jobs like that. Hopefully they have found new employment.

Orphanides was always our supermarket of choice, especially the one located up the road from Debenhams; I thought that it was very light and airy and well spaced out and not cramped like Paps and AM. Sorry to see it go.

Lloyd it went down as the owners just refused to pay the bills. In the end court orders were taken out. The guilty parties tried to leave the Island but were caught at the airport with cases full of cash. My memory is not what it used to be and I hope that I have got the correct info here.

The business went under because the owner spirited away huge sums of money bolstered by unpaid bills and staff. He was on a repeat visit to xxxx when caught but being Cyprus too powerful to imprison.
These are the facts as those who mix with knowledgeable Cypriots will know. To suggest Lloyd that the ambiance of the stores reduced the takings is crass because Cypriots do no give a hoot about that sort of stuff otherwise they would not live in the disheveled homes they do so long as the car outside is new!

I remember the Cyprus Mall that still stands empty. We used to go often, especially for the cheap ready cooked chickens. Some greedy so and so's spoiled it by queuing early and buying trolley loads of them leaving nothing for people like us who only needed one, that stopped us going. Yes, we used to buy other stuff also not just the chicken.
IMHO, if staff lost their jobs, maybe in some cases it was deserved.

You have a rather strange opinion about Cypriots. Maybe some of them don't care about their house, but I know many who are very proud owners of very beautiful houses.

I think it was the Laiki bank that eventually brought the company down. At the time a list was published of all the loans and mortgages that Orphanides had taken, some properties mortgaged more than once with the company ultimately unable to meet its financial commitment to the bank; that was it's demise..
