Lidl's Strawberries today...

Post by cyprusmax47 »

Bought some Strawberries today at Lidl and after coming home I could not resist to try them straight away. Absolutely delicious and sooo fresh. They must have picked them this morning and delivered at TOTK. You just have to look how fresh the leaves are... I checked the price now and they are only 1.89 Euro per 500 gr......

By the time Wimbledon comes round the Cypriot strawberries are finished. Different climate.

Agree with zorbathejock, the strawberries at this time of year are much tastier than the ones available in June. Also have some for tomorrow as an Easter treat after the Easter Egg.

I have Strawberries every day for breakfast with other berries and yogurt. The best ones have been Spanish like the size of a small plumb. Aldi in the UK tend to provide the best and at a good price. They look really nice and fresh though Max.

You cannot beat the freshness in Cyprus. The distance from the producer, either in Paphos district or Larnaca district towards Lidl is only 1-2 hours of driving time away. By the way: when they are extra large then a lot of fertilizer AND hormones are involved...( ask a farmer! ) and the taste can be very watery.

Sorry but picking your own in the UK...now that's fresh, and English Strawberries....probably the best in the world..but the Cypriot ones are gorgeous...and here!
I totally agree. I used to go strawberry picking at the famous Hewitts farm just off the M25 near Bromley, then buy the lovely untreated cream from their shop, then on to Wimbledon tennis. Those were the days. :D

At the Mukhtars shop in Mandria, on the airport road, only €1.25 per 500g. Plus, they are very fresh, unlike the ones we bought in Alpha Mega a few weeks ago, which went mouldy within a day. Last year, they became so cheap, we made homemade strawberry jam, and even with the expensive jamming sugar, it worked out about a quarter of the price as the jars we usually buy from a strawberry farm near Knossos, Limmasol.

One of the view things which are intact, are my taste buds. So when I post that these one's were delicious, than this is not a lie. I only remember that staying in Italy, I went often into the forest for raspberries and wood strawberries which were more tasty. I would be concerned picking them near a motorway if they grow without protection of a greenhouse. I believe that Cyprus is less polluted from CO etc than the air in central Europe
or Italy, even when we had recently the dust problem from the Sahara. And like tomatoes and other crops many are growing in greenhouses anyway this time a year. Anyhow I ate my 500 gr yesterday within a couple of hours dipped in Mascarpone, so they had no chance to look as old as the one's on the photo from Jim..

For the first time In your life....you are wrong...again...😉A beautiful sunny day, punnet in hand,,strolling through the strawberry field...pick one..eat one....one of life's greatest pleasures...and a glass of fizz just to wash them down...oh and some Devonshir cream...and then Wimbledon...some things you just can't beat. CyprusMax, we used to live close to Nemi, in Italy and went to the Strawberry "Sagre" every year...a real treat, a glass of Prosecco and a bowl of strawberries or a strawberry tartlet...bliss. 😍
You should try getting out more ;) The World dosnt begin and end at Wimbledon

I agree that hydroponics, used extensively in Egypt and Israel, give no taste to fruit and veg.

Living in Lanark, in the head of the Clyde Valley, the area was historically a tomato and fruit growing area, enjoying an enclosed micro-climate and great soil. When young, the entire are was covered in greenhouses, heated by coal and peat, were tomatoes were grown. Outside, raspberries and strawberries, then plums would be grown. The tastes were amazing.

Now, very few tomato houses and very few fields of strawberries. Only grown for local consumption. Taste is still amazing.

The raspberries from Perthshire and Blairgowrie in particular, are some of the best in the world.

The strawberries in Lidl the other day originated from Deryneia, I think that's what it said on the box.

The one's I took the pic were packed from "FarmersFresh" but no indication from which place in Cyprus they were produced. I have the empty package in front of me: Origin Cyprus, Class I, Caliber 25+mm, 500 gr.....
