Simple, Shane. In Winter, with 8 hours of daylight available (at least here in UK @ 52ºN), we don't want our kids either going to, or coming home from, school in pitch darkness.
Similarly, in Summer, we don't want kids playing out in the street at 11pm in broad daylight, when we're trying to get to sleep, do we?
In the northern hemisphere, the further South you go (towards the Equator), then the less of an issue these factors become, like in Cyprus @ 32ºN. But Cyprus probably wishes to align its time with that of Greece...

Still begs the question though, with today's technology do we still need to follow this archaic rule

In Cyprus I would certainly prefer that they kept the time on Summer hours all the year through..

How would modern technology counteract the position of the sun?
What amazes me is that we have the same discussion every year. By "we" I mean society.

Re: One less hour in bed tonight...
Sunrise and sunset times in Cyprus for the longest day of the year, June 21st, are easy enough to establish. But if the clocks remain as they are and don't go back an hour in late October, where will that leave Cyprus sunrise/sunset times in late December?

It is certain that instead of going dark around 4-30 it will stay light another hour until around 5-30 in the early evening.. Surely better for the Winter Visitors..

and Sunrise next morning? 09:00 / 09:30? Not what Paphos residents really want in winter for their kids going to school mehinks, Trev...

Re: One less hour in bed tonight...
I think the north of Cyprus tried not altering the clocks once in the past few years , it only lasted one season , not sure why they changed back .
Re: One less hour in bed tonight...
Possibly because there was a dreadful accident involving a school bus on a mountain road, in the dark morning.
Re: One less hour in bed tonight...
Some trivia on changing the clocks for anyone interested!

I like the extra hour in the evening as in Cyprus it is getting dark very early due to it's easterly location in Europe, not like Germany or North Italy where in summer is daylight until 10.30 pm.
