Today's Walk

Walked from Jim's Beach (near Rikkos) to the Lighthouse and back to the harbour this morning whilst Rosemary went to the Mall to get her nails done. This is a new thing with her. Another way of spending our meagre pension First time she had them done was on a cruise and for some reason has needed them done ever since.

Piles of seaweed now. The huge pile on the land from last year near Penelope's Church has now been cleared but new piles are appearing.

The clear up of the seaweed has now started.

I could not believe how warm it was. On the way back, at 10:15am it was 27c on the car thermometer. In Penrhyn Bay this morning it was 0c so a huge difference between the UK and here.

The seaweed is also being cleared from the moat. The smell was really bad.

I was there this morning to John, must have been close to bumping into one another, it was a little breezy I thought, it was much warmer back in land. Nice hour looking at that smelly pile of seaweed dog had a good run on the weed...

John, Cruise, and meagre pension really does not wash.......

Cruise was when we were still working. First one, thanks to cyprusliving members posting that Thomson had reduced the price of their Turkey, Crete Greece and Israel cruise to less than two hundred pounds. We had never been on one before and really enjoyed it. Have been on four since, all when we were working and all booked as last minute with Iglu.

What has really messed us up is the increase in pension age. When we semi retired, over ten years ago, Rosemary was supposed to get her state pension at 60. This then went to 62, then 64 and now 66. Mine was 65 but is now 65 and a half. Basically, we carried on working until 63, when I had my heart problems. No more work now. Now surviving on our teacher's pension alone, until we get our state pension.

We went for a walk today. My wife also likes to get her nails done.

I thought, also, that it was very warm today. Temperature in Essex was about 2o.

If it is nice tomorrow we will probably go to the beach for a few hours.

Our daughter was snowed in, in Mid Wales and could not get back to Penrhyn Bay last night for work in Llandudno. She was not the only one. Members of staff who went to the rugby in Cardiff on Saturday were stuck and only got back today.
Usually the difference in temperature between the UK and Cyprus is around 10c. Today it was over 25c.

I forgot to post the picture of the moat being cleared. The smell was unbelievable. It could be smelled from quite a way up the path alongside the Mosaics. Some tourists thought it was sewerage but I explained it was the seaweed.

Jim, by the smell you would have thought they had dug up a graveyard with decomposing bodies. It was horrible. Good job they are doing it now and not at Easter when the hotels are full. I walked up as far as the bend for the lighthouse and it could still be smelled there, as the wind was coming from the east.

I am glad that they cleared out the moat before the Easter rush. That smell would be really bad for the visitors in the hotels and so bad for business along the harbour. It seems that clearing this seaweed is becoming a serious issue.

I dont know anyone who got stuck in the snow, sorry.

Today's walk was late afternoon, from Jim's Beach, near Riccos, to the harbour.
First thing I spotted was a lorry full of seaweed tipping its load next to Penelope's Church. It was wet sea weed and stank, just what the tourists want to smell.This lorry came off the main road and down to the beach, so it was seaweed from another location.

A little further along, by the hotel next to the church, some of the seaweed had been cleared, leaving wet seaweed exposed. The smell was vomit inducing and I covered my nose with my hat and breathed through my mouth.
Met Rosemary at Stavros's kiosk, next to the Imperial Hotel. She is having trouble with her knee although the tumeric and Glucosamine seem to be working on her back. Had a lovely Frappe. She then picked me up at the harbour.

Someone had been busy making pebble sculptures at the Kato Paphos end of the path.

Easter decorations are beginning to appear. One year this one did not have wicks for the candles and we thought they were carrots for the Easter Bunny.

Yesterday some of the seaweed had been cleared and today a digger was busy clearing more up.

The digger is dumping the seaweed in the pile that was started a couple of days ago by the lorry I saw that came off the main road.
It is just by Penelopes's Church. Luckily for the two tourists sat on the wall, they were not sitting downwind of the obnoxious smell.

I spoke to them and they mentioned the awful smell. They thought it was sewerage. I am afraid not a good advertisment for Cyprus.
Downwind, and even at hotels around half a mile away, the seaweed from here could be smelt, and there were few people on sunbeds.
I really think the clearance of this foul smelling seaweed needs to be done throughout the winter, and not just at the beginning of the main tourist season.

Near the harbour, this amused me. A high tech entrance system to the new apartments at the harbour.

I was thinking of buying one of those apartments. Only €1,350,000. Would be very handy for my walks along the coast and it would save me driving down from Anarita. Wonder if they have got title deeds?

Thanks for all the photos - I’m very glad this forum is not on Smellovision, as I know how bad seaweed can smell when a pile has been disturbed, mid-rot.

Thanks Kay. Went out late this afternoon. Sea rough and a reminder that summer has not yet arrived. From walking in temperatures around 30c yesterday, it was 18c when I set off from Jim's Beach, near Riccos, and 16c when I got back to the car. Cypriots had their winter coats on.

My favourite coffee kiosk unfortunately was closed. It looks as if the municipality is trying to close him down. Stavros has had to move all his chairs from the tables and umbrellas and replaced them with sunbeds. Even on a cool windy day like today, there would have been people at tables, having a drink and watching the waves.

Lots of sports tourists about. A group was doing training on the tennis courts adjacent with the path and these girls are swimmers from an eastern european country who are training here. Also there are literally hundreds of cyclists for the local races.

On the way back it started raining. Luckily for me it was not too bad and with the wind I soon got dry.
