Re: Retirement in Paphos
Good post, perhaps a few days stay, in different parts of the Island might be the way to go?William Morris wrote: ↑Tue Mar 20, 2018 9:28 am Quiet life, re your original post.
You say that you have never been to Paphos before!! So any tips or recommendations that people give will not mean anything to you.
You need to see for yourself which area suit you. The only way that you can do that is to come out and look around. Maybe it won't suit you. Maybe Limassol or the Eastern side will be more to your liking. It is bigger than you think.
Don't worry about bank accounts and things like that.
Just visit and look around.

That is how to do it.Quiet-life! wrote: ↑Tue Mar 20, 2018 10:05 am As long as it takes to find a property to rent long term before buying![]()
Get a good map. Drive around, talk to people who actually live here, get a view of different areas at different times of the day. Just like normal house hunting.
Good luck to you both.

Re: Retirement in Paphos
Yes - but as this is Cyprus,
don’t expect your list of required documents to be all the immigration officials want! As my Dave used to say, bring everything including your grandmother’s butler’s swimming certificate!
Enjoy your stay, driving around and chatting to lots of different people.

Actually we found the required list to be spot on. We saw loads of people who hadn't bothered to read it, and the loud shouting matches that ensued, but if we stuck to the list we were fine.

Re: Retirement in Paphos
We have an account with BOC and have had no problems, plus they have a lot of branches.
If you’re thinking of a village worth having a trip out to Mandria and Anarita. Both are medium size villages although Mandria is probably the larger of the two. Both are a 10 minute drive down the motorway to Paphos. If you decide to have a look around the area we live in Mandria and would be happy to meet you for a Keo or coffee.
In reply to Roberts post, if you are retiring early you would show immigration your dividend/interest documents as you need to prove you can support yourself ie have the minimum income which is about €9500 Plus €1600 for each dependent. You also don’t qualify for the S1 so would need to show you had private health insurance.

Cheers LD52.....reminds me of one of my old favorites Level 42
.....so what do you need to qualify for S1........sorry if it has already been explained ...?

Re: Retirement in Paphos
S1 is a form / certificate you get when you start receiving UK state pension. It proves that you have an income from the UK Government. It also means that you can join the Cyprus heath Scheme.

Most interesting Lazydaze52. Can I ask how you know that dividends/interest are accepted? Also how do you know the limits?Lazydaze52 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 20, 2018 3:23 pm ...

I've been using as a likely minimum number the 3rd country immigration permit amounts of "at least €9568,17 (CY£5,600) for a single applicant and moreover at least €4613,22 (CY£2,700) for every dependent person"

To the OP
Rather than moving lock, stock and barrel, have you thought about the 2 country option? Spending part of the year in Cyprus and part in the UK.
Obviously there are cost implications but this is what we will do. We have an apartment in Cyprus and a house in the UK and will be able to go backwards and forwards as we please.
Might be something to think about.........

Beechwood
A very good idea, we sold up in the UK and bought in Cyprus, how I wish we never had. If I could choose again, I would rent out my house in the UK and rent in Cyprus. The housing market is too easy to get into in Cyprus, and very hard to get out of, if like us, you have no option but to return to the UK.

Re: Retirement in Paphos
totally agree with firefly, we did the same given the crystal ball would have rented then you can just move back to uk when you think the dream is over, this applies to any place in the sun dreams, we down sized and still have a small place in uk, but if you wont to live the dream for a few years and your income is ltd then do not burn your bridges we still enjoy Cyprus but as the years go on it gets harder and harder

Re: Retirement in Paphos
Hi Robert
My comment on documentation for dividends/interest was made because you have to prove you can support yourself when you move here, and if that is what you are going to live off that is what you will have to show them proof of. Our state and private pensions were sufficient so they weren’t interested in any other savings we had although we did take documentation and copies of our UK bank statements showing the amounts of interest we received, just in case.
In my post I said “about” because that was the figure we found during our research at the time we moved here 3 years ago and we were very surprised how low this was, I wouldn’t imagine it has increased that much since so your €9568 sounds about right. In fact we were never advised by any of the immigration staff of a fixed amount, just that we needed to be able to support ourselves and I have read (can’t remember where) that there is no hard and fast figure for EU members, how true that is I wouldn’t like to say. You are erring in the side of caution using the figures from your source anyway.

Word of warning about renting property out in the UK...take a look at the tv series ''Cant pay well take it away'' a nightmare for some, had a mate of mine lose thousands in rent, then had to pay thousands in lawyers fees, and putting right the mess they left behind?.
