Lets Kick off a Discussion

Post by 71 Trans Am »

This site is now up and running and i think a good Discussion would set it on its way so just as a starter to get things moving --- What do members think the general feel is in the Paphos area for 2017- Full time residents will have a much better idea i think but visitors will also have their own views - When we were in paphos this year several Bars and Restaurants commented that the all inclusive hotel deals were putting them to death and many had closed since our previous visit however some new ventures had started up - The exchange rate has also changed and this effects everyone so what do you think 2017 will be like - what changes have you noticed ? - is there a positive outlook ? Have prices increased in general or is it just the effect of the exchange rate ? I for one would be most interested in your views and anyway it gets a discussion going.

Best Regards

Alan

I mean the bars etc got expensive so the demand for All-inc was in demand ..by the time they reacted and dropped prices the guests were used to it ..

Jersey, is it really you, the original Jersey on CL? Haven't seen a post from you, or your mate Cardigan, for at least a couple of years. I hope you are keeping well.

I see what you mean - When we first started coming over many many years ago there was no harassment when walking down the streets - But now almost all of the food and drink establishments try to get you in no matter what and it is quite annoying as you cannot walk anywhere without passing them so you are subject to this all of the time - The Harbour area is the same However since the timeshare touts have gone it is somewhat better and i can understand genuine business's have to make a living but my stance is the more you harass me the more i will ignore you - If a person is interested in one of the boat trips they will inquire but should not be Hassled - How do residents cope with this ? - you must walk around at some point

To be honest most of them recognise us now & we don't get bothered much at all! In fact, quite a few of the staff in the Harbour cafes stop & have a chat with us even though we've never been in their place!

Regarding 2017, we are really looking forward to it! The TOTK road is practically finished, the Old Town is starting to take shape nicely, there should be plenty of events throughout the year to celebrate the European City of Culture, we have 2 sets of "Family" coming over & hopefully Cyprus unification will be sorted in some form or other!

Can't wait :D

I love the way Cypriots greet you like an old friend when you return to restaurants.
Always seen this in Coral Bay as holiday makers and even more so now we live here!

As for all inc. i believe there are different kinds of tourists those who could be anywhere in the world as long as its hot, sunny and there's alcohol and those interested in the country/area they are visiting.
My family are in the 2nd and all inc is our idea of hell!

We purposefully chose to live in Fyti, up in the mountains, because we did not want the hassle of living in a tourist area or on a complex.
Up here we integrate with the Cypriot community and I help out with olive picking, orange and lemon picking, ploughing and fertilising and wood cutting, the other week we lopped the tree at Simou church and the priest and locals thought it great that an Englishman was helping out. I even go out hunting with them on Sundays.
There are also the side benefits to this integration; I get all the fruit we want, fresh, local olive oil by the container full, we do not pay for wood and we eat for free in a local restaurant but there is also the knowledge that the locals will not allow us to be ripped-off, I am told where to take my car for the best repairs, phone calls to companies are made for me, with quicker results and I am being taught how to forage for mushrooms, herbs and vegetables, it really is a brand new learning and living experience.
If we need anything Polemi is a 7 minute drive away and the supermarket owners of both stores are great, helpful people. Paphos is 30 mins away and Polis 25 so if we need a town shop it’s not too far to go. We look upon ourselves as being very lucky, we have some very good English friends who we socialise with but we also have our Cypriot friends so we get the best of both worlds.

Johnoddy, what a great story. That is the real life of Cyprus. The way it was and for you the way it is. Great to hear it straight from the hoses mouth (so to speak)

We still go down to the harbour for a walk and find the touting for business not to be a great problem. Nothing like it is in the places we have visited on cruises in Turkey. Many of the eastern European staff are very friendly. We enjoy meals or a coffee at Ma Bianca, where the owner is a teacher, like ourselves, but his waitresses are eastern European. We also eat at the pizza place next door to, and owned by the Harbour Restaurant, and again always receive a very warm welcome.
Our favourite restaurant, Flambe, is not in Kato Paphos now, but on the Tomb of the Kings Road. Kerri, the owner, has always employed Eastern Europeans, and I would say they are treated as part of the family. When he closed down in Kato Pahos, his two staff found jobs at a local hotel, where they are both doing very well career wise, but they still visit him at his new restaurant after shifts.
