A 4Mw system in schools, is not very large.... I'd have thought at least 10Mw would fit onto an average school building?

As nearly all school buildings have flat roof there is limited space to install the panels as every row needs sufficient distance to avoid shade. It is only waisting money if they stand too close together. But you might be right that a average school roof could hold 15- 20 kWp installed PV panels. My own PV-installation of 20 kWp on land measures 23 x 15 m with an distance of 4.20 m of every row.

I love the Energy Dept spokesman's name:

Ioannis Economides

Eponymous, or what? :)

As a very minor producer of electricity from my 3 kva, 12 photo voltaic panels system, for which I am charged for net metering, as what electricity my pv system produces is fed straight to the National Grid. I have also noted the variety of steadily increasing new very small and not quite so small charges which are imposed by AEK and added to my 2 monthly electricity bills. Then with VAT added to top it off, a small, electricity bill of 20 something euros for power actually consumed, ended up costing €84!

After reading the CM article about the creation of a new photo voltaic park at Akrotiri and the money required to build it the answer seems obvious. Is AEK loading everyones electricity bills with all these sneaky little extra charges to help pay for it, or is it just to be used to pay their pensions perhaps?

How much are you charged for net-metering Dee?

Since the new tariff #1 everybody has to pay all the different charges which were mostly included in the old tariff. So if I look at my bill than EAC is charging 9.2 cent per Kwh I have consumed. Network use and Ancillary Service depends on the amount of Kwh and comes on top. So if you produce your own electricity your meter counts less Kwh which effects the first three charges and will reduce them accordingly. The other charges like meter reading, electricity supply, VAT, RES fund everybody has to pay with or without net-metering. Fuel adjustment is also lower if one has less Kwh consumed and is at the moment on the rise together with diesel prices.
So altogether my bill raises from initially 9 cent/Kwh to ca 20 cent in the end including VAT.

Strangely my usual standing charges bill of €33 is around €85 from the end of February reading. The fact that we were away for 18 days over Christmas and New year, makes it even more surprising.

Perhaps it was cloudy and raining each day when we were away..
