Beast from the east
Re: Beast from the east
Well Lloyd maybe not 5ft but just about managed 2 ft drifts today. Just been talking to next door who was born and bred here and he says it is the worst he has known it which surprised us. He walked the 1.5 miles to Sainsbury and said the gritters and ploughs were out but they just could not cope with the blizzard conditions as as soon as it was cleared it blew straight back again!! The snow is that very dry stuff! Pretty cold now at -5 but with the wind chill more like -10! Guy in the street below me has the right idea and came home on his tractor! Quite surprised how well we have acclimatised, maybe because our house is so cosy and warm!

Re: Beast from the east
Poppy, I posted our confrontation with it a little while ago on my "Been laid up for a while thread" and yes, the heating makes a huge difference, hence why I can spend all my days in the conservatory at the back of the house.

Re: Beast from the east
Just been out with the dog and it is very cold. I came in the front door and my face and hands started to burn. Last night in bed early doors we had a tiff about who was getting the remote for the heating as we left it in the back room. Mrs said who wears the pants in this house and I said you so go and get it.

Re: Beast from the east
They've handed out the gas storage warning today.... We may not have enough of it to last in UK.
Doesn't help our "No Gas Storage" ongoing fight with Halite and the aftermath of the brine output

Is this gas through the pipes to your home you refer too, or gas in bottles.. ??

Re: Beast from the east
One thing puzzles me. Why have British railtracks still got points that freeze in bad weather? This is used as an excuse for cancelling trains. In Germany,Austria, France etc they seem to be capable of keeping their railways going all through the winter. In Switzerland trains were equipped with a snowplough device at the front of the locomotive, some 50 yrs ago. Our trains grind or freeze to a halt, leaving thousands of people stranded.
Why can’t major roads be snowploughed, and gritted with salt or something added to inhibit the road refreezing? Do or should all schools have central heating fitted?

I don't know the answer Dee but what I do know is we are fast running out of food!! Our local little shop has not had a delivery all week and there is no milk, bread, eggs etc to be had! I fought my way off the estate in my wellies today through a mini blizzard to the shop to find the shelves were bare!! The gritter with plough on the front passed me but as there is no traffic moving it does not seem to be having much effect! Today does seem slightly better but still nothing moving except I saw the family opposite go off in their truck with skis!!
Re: Beast from the east
It's a bit like Christmas, panic buying for just two days. Today Tesco did manage to deliver my grocery order, even in the snow, well done Tesco.
Had to cancel our trip to the North West of England tomorrow for a party to see our Grandson off to Afghanistan, sad about that.

Re: Beast from the east
It is not so much panic buying as there have been no deliveries getting through! On my trudge through the village today I saw some quite spectacular icicles and was just telling my husband when I saw them all along the bottom of my car!! Never seen that before!
Re: Beast from the east
On one of the UK Face Book pages I am on quite a few people are having trouble with their Central heating boilers. Apparently the plastic pipe taking condensation outside from the boiler is freezing up and it stops running

Re: Beast from the east
I’ve been out to unfreeze ours. Fortunately the ice hadn’t totally blocked the pipe
Just poured a nice glass of Shiraz as a reward for my endeavours!

Re: Beast from the east
Trevor - it's piped gas....
We had a meeting a month back with the guys from Halite who are planning to bore 19 new salt caverns nearby then flush the unwanted brine out into the Irish sea. They have no experience in brine output but also told us that at the last really cold spell in UK a few years back, there were less than 6hrs of gas in storage to supply the demand for our country.
And further up the road is the fracking protest with worries of earth tremors, gas pipes to be laid in another direction, brine output pipes going under the River Wyre and not forgetting a nuclear power plant just across Morecambe Bay. Oh, and the Chinese wanting to build a gas plant on the old ICI site at Norcross.
The word on the streets is BOOM!

Re: Beast from the east
Well here we are today and the snow has drifted into great piles against external doors and windows. No cars have moved in our Close, but neighbours have sent texts to us asking if we need any help, wonderful. Ross Onn Wye, a few miles away was on red alert last night. I just feel so sorry for rough sleepers in this weather. I have to say I m rather worried about the gas situation, no heating could prove fatal for some elderly people.

Re: Beast from the east
Love it! Just like our two dogs as they are just too small for these deep snow drifts!
We are now in day 4 of being snowed in and cut off - just tractors and 4 wheel drives able to move. The village shop has no supplies and is now not expecting a delivery until next week. We have a Sainsburys home delivery booked for Sunday but whether or not they will get here is anyone's guess!!
I reckon, being careful,we can just about manage until Sunday so just hope things improve! Our next door neighbour has very kindly cleared our path and gritted it. No snow today and winds have subsided but still bitterly cold. They say that salt does not work if it is lower than4 degrees so not sure what they use in Canada etc? The A1 which is the major route to Scotland is closed by us northbound and stranded drivers have been sleeping in our local sports centre. Quite a drama !!

Re: Beast from the east
Just seen the news about the passengers bailing out from the stationary train just outside Lewisham station. Did they draw lots I wonder to see which one would be the first to jump and test if the elecricity was still on??? Which it was apparently as they had to switch it off as soon as they realised passengers had bailed out, causing mayhem both in the station and for other trains in the area.
Absolutely love those horses btw!!
