Cruise ships & on line banking safety?

Post by Chaddy »

A little difference of opinions the other day (in the local bar of course) on whether it is safe to take your beloved lap top on a cruise ship and do your on line banking there.
Side one said it is unsafe as it is easy for the bad guys to hack into on board, whilst the other side said not so as ships have overcome that little problem now and it is totally safe.
In any event one bar expert said that if your on line account is hacked into online, on a ship, your bank will not compensate and say it is your fault as you did not take enough responsibility and duty of care.
Comments on this would be fully appreciated,,,thanks

Whilst you will obviously get some answers from members. Would it not be best to ask your bank if they would compensate you .

I personally think that it is easier to wait around in a bar until the laptop owners have had a few and then hack them. They are so busy debating about upcoming cruises that they don't notice.😕😕

No problem using internet on ship, same as anywhere else ... the only problem is the amount they want for daily internet access

Similar situation on land with Premier Inn the last time I stayed there. There were two wifi addresses available. One completely open, but you were warned that you could be hacked by other guests and another, where payment was required, which was advertised as completely safe. Your choice depending on the level of protection on your computer.

Or take out insurance against damage due to unauthorised use of your credit cards or online banking. I pay € 7.- per year and they´ll even pay in case of gross negligence (e. g. if I leave the PIN for my online banking next to the laptop). I like that peace of mind.
