MOT

Post by jonjo »

While paying my car tax and renewing my insurance I’ve realised I won’t be in Cyprus in July when the MOT is due. Does anyone know if I can renew earlier in April or just leave it until later in August?
Thanks
Jon

You can renew earlier, but your 2 year MOT will start from the date the MOT was completed.
I think (but am not sure) that the rules about driving with no MOT are the same as the UK.
You can only travel to an MOT station having first made an appointment there.

I asked this question to a local car dealer who replied thus ...

Yes you can get it done earlier no problem but it will be 2 years from the day you go into the MOT station. You can also wait until you return, not sure about grace period but if stopped I am sure an explanation of having a holiday home will suffice especially if you are on your way to get it done.

What is the cost of a MOT? Is it the same wherever you go?

A friend of mine was stopped with no MOST, got it done that day and the car passed.
However he was still fined €180 and had Points on his license...
As Trev stated there is no grace period..

The old wreck cars you see running about with broken or missing rear and head lights has this damage been done since their last m o t within the two year period ????. The police seem unaware of these vehicles .

Interesting aspect. How does that point system work? How many points can you collect and within what time period without your license being suspended? What if your license is from another country?

I'll bet your friend wasn't a Cypriot. The police seem much more lenient with Cypriots than with anyone else, probably because
expats and aliens are more likely to pay any fine. Just economics really, go for the winners.

I wish people would stop posting rubbish like this  only recently the Police had a blitz on traffic offences...thousands of tickets were issued....the majority being given to expats according to you?

During a "blitz" I have no statistics. But the rest of the year it seems to be like I posted.
This is also the opinion of my neighbours, 3 are not Cypriot and 2 are.
Of course everyone other than you talks rubbish.

You hear all sorts of home truths down "the pub" (local bar). Some palatable some not.
