Dont know if this has been asked before, but a mate of mine who has a holiday home here, is thinking about buying a car, instead of always renting, question, to you have to be a resident, to be able to register a car over here? many thanks.

no problem buying a car if you have a proper address in Cyprus. make sure you get it registered in both names on the log book because if one of a partnership should die then the car is held as part of the estate until probate is finished, and the other cannot drive it lawfully. also get the insurance in two names as well. we have a car for the last 7 years and have had no problems.

I look after a property where the British owners come over a couple of times a year & they have a car. It is road taxed, MOT'd, insured by Atlantic & has a Cyprus log book so no problem!

A friend of mine has a second home in Paphos, second to one in the UK that is and, guess what, he bought a car in Cyprus. It was not new therefore it was already registered.

I am guessing that because we are in the EU that he is entitled to own a car in another EU country.

Goodness knows what the situation will be in 2019.

I don’t hink that there was any problem with someone who was non resident buying and keeping a car in Cyprus before Cyprus joined the EU. The 2 things aren’t related as far as I know. In fact some non- resident property owners back then used to buy duty free cars and those cars were kept ‘in bond’ when they weren’t here.
Cyprus used to function reasonably well before the EU arrived, though in those days there was far less money around, less people, almost no crime and for much of the time no high speed motorway linking Paphos with the rest of the island. But we survived none the less!

further to my reply above:the registered address on the log book is our Tala address and the car is kept when not in use at the airport with Auto air parks for 250 euros a year. drop offs and pick ups included. Insured with Atlantic and when not in use suspended down to third party only. never had any problems and would recommend WHL goes ahead and buys a car.

Yes you do need an address on the car registration document. It should be your own address, whether owned or rented here. But unless you have a property here do you really need to buy a car? In the event of an accident the police will use this information to determine who the car belongs to if they need to locate the driver.
It’s nothing to do with the EU. The important thing is that your car must have valid road tax, an MOT certifcate once it is 3 yrs old, and a valid insurance certifcate.

Prior to the advent of Cyprus joinng the EU, many expats who retired here were entitled to buy a Duty Free car subject to certain conditions. To do this could be more difficult, entailing a visit and interview at the customs dept in Nicosia who decided if you were a suitable person to be able to own a duty free car! But this was stopped once Cyprus joined the EU.

Unfortunately, your guess while sounding reasonable is incorrect. E.g. even though I´m a German citizen I couldn´t keep my car registered in my name when I left the country (had to register in in my daughter´s name). Also, when I wanted to register my car in Cyprus I only had a copy of my yellow slip with me and that wasn´t good enough. They demanded that I go home to fetch the original (that was in 2016 in Larnaca).

We own a house in Tala which we use for holidays only - we have never lived in CY

We imported a car in 2013 and registered it with the relevant authorities using our Tala address without problems - I don't remember needing any proof of address.

I can only report my experience and I´m also surprised that others weren´t asked for their yellow slip. I can only speculate that there was a change in how this is handled or that maybe there are differnces between districts. I registered my car in Larnaca.

It's one of those typical Cyprus things, I have had a holiday home since 1992 in Cyprus and am on my 4th car in Cyprus, if you buy the car privately and register it through citizens advice, no problem, if you try going to the ministry of transport office on the Polis road they say you have to be a Cyprus citizen, no yellow sli, no log book.
If you buy it from a garage, no problem, they can register it.
I did check with the EU and it turns out that legally you have to be a Cyprus resident to own a car in Cyprus, they told me it was the same in Germany but believe me it is easy to own one without living there just stay away from the transport office. Odd I know.
