The only person I know who got a bad dose of flu, was the one who had the flu jab...I still believe it weakens you....my opinion.Happy in Cyprus wrote: ↑Fri Jan 12, 2018 2:02 am
The UK's NHS don't thinks so. According to the tv news yesterday, 80% of their staff are not innoculated.
Personally I'm not convinced and have never had a flu jab. Can't remember the last time I had flu in the last decade or two.
So sorry to hear of your experience Rita, more so as you must have looked forward to your cruise for some time. Anyway, good to hear that you are now getting back to normal; a Happy and Healthy New Year to you!
FLU JABS
Re: FLU JABS
Re: FLU JABS
Lincoln we may all have different opinions but the medical advice from senior medical personnel is to have it. Both Rita and Alewfin have experienced the flu recently and on both occasions their doctors said they would have been much worse without it. I don't know what the situation in Cyprus Hospitals is at the moment but certainly in the UK people who have not had the vaccination are contributing
to the serious situation in Hospitals.Certainly my Consultant in Paphos Hospital insisted I had the jab and my Doctors here in the UK.Why do people always think they know better than the medical profession? I do agree though that multi vitamins and eating healthily can only assist by boosting your immune system.

Re: FLU JABS
It is not a case of people thinking that they know better than the medical profession Poppy. Just because something works for one person does not mean it will work for everyone and in some cases the medical profession actually recommends that people do not have the flu vaccination. I believe that people should help themselves and build up a natural defence and lifestyle does have an effect on the outcome.

On UK news this morning it is reported that an 18 year old has died from Aussie Flu, very sad at such an early age. It is also reported that this flu epidemic is the worst for 50 years. You pays your money and takes your chance it seems.

Poppy, Alewfin,Anarita John, Lloyd
Thank you all for your good wishes and I trust you Alewfin are on the mend. I believe it is going to be some time before I get back to my usual self the smallest task is so tiring but then I am ancient.
I am particularly impressed with galexinda's post and agree entirely with it. This is something of a contentious issue but it is up to each and everyone of us to make our own decision after taking advice. I too believe diet and life style are very important. Like you Lloyd I take Pommegramit seeds with my porridge each and every day (love em) together with blueberries. Thank you Austin 7 (AR in disguise) for the information regarding where to obtain the juice (real not cordial) I shall add it to my shopping list. I take 3 meals a day home prepared and cooked, oily fish 3 days per week (I am not allowed the supplements) vegetables and fruit. I rarely have take aways and junk food has no place in my home. So I can honestly say I endeavour to follow a sensible diet and the odd glass of red wine is supposed to do me good (not had any since Christmas day).
As I said earlier I have had a flu vacination each year for the past 30 odd years following a very nasty bout of flu at the time. This is the first time since then that I have had full blown flu of the debilitating kind or other type of associated illness but my senior doctor at Southampton did say it was in all probability no more than 45% effective in someone of my age. He did say (and this is not to be alarmist) given the severity of the two strains of influenza I had contracted, plus pneumonia and my atrial fibrillation I could have died. So on balance lads and lassies I think I personally will continue to take the annual jab unless (Lloyd) our mutual cardiologist here in Paphos advises otherwise.
Stay healthy all of you and whatever future decisions you choose to take I for one wish you good health always.
Best wishes
Rita

So glad you're feeling better, and that your treatment was so good.
MOH and I have had this Flu since Christmas, OH ended up in A & E, (sent in by the GP), he's still not well, feels ok one minute and ill the next, but at 82 it's no easy thing to get over, thankfully I'm ok now. Would I have my jabs again ? Yes every time, without them things may have turned out very differently.

That's the HMG quango known as N.I.C.E (National Institute for health and Care Excellence) at work there, Lloyd. An ironically unfortunate misnomer if there ever was one...
They decide which medicines become available on NHS Prescriptions, and which ones don't (usually on cost grounds, even if they have been proven to save lives elsewhere in the world)!
