I was wondering what sort of services these devices can pull in, without monthly subs like Prime?

Do not think they work here, but interested to know, I use several Mag units for streaming TV and very happy with all of them and more than happy to pay for the services..

Yes they work here but you would need to side load Kodi or one of its derivatives such as SPMC, then install the add ons of your choice.
Don't like them personally and you need a decent WIFI signal as they do not have an ethernet port.
