They look a little like Osage Orange, not true Citrus but I believe protected species in Cyprus.
Certainly there was something of a drama in our village when one was cut down.

However, your link shows exactly what I saw, so hedge apple it is. Even though they grow in trees.

If you Google a little further you will find that the early American settlers used Osage Orange as a fast growing hedge..........hence the name.
