Microsoft con active again.

Post by josef k »

Yes, they are at it again. Received a call today from 'Jason" regarding windows on my computer having a problem. I hadn't contacted them, but they had identified a problem. Strange, as I don't have windows on my computer. I have Linux.

Needless to say, it's a con, with people being contacted and conned into providing access to their computer and all the data on it, together with card details etc. They were doing the rounds a couple of years ago and they are back.

Be warned. Microsoft or anyone else can't identify problems on your computer without you giving them access, and they would never contact you. If you get such a call it is always, I repeat loudly, ALWAYS a con. Just put the phone down and don't engage in any conversation.

You have been warned.

On the plus side, there used to be a similar scam involving companies falsely pretending to be Microsoft Support Companies. They would appear at the top of the search listings, and would try and fleece you in the same way. They conned my father in law out of nearly £100 before he got in touch and we were able to put a stop to it.

If you google "Microsoft Support" now though, you only seem to get official Microsoft links, complete with their logo.

So hopefully, at least that scam has been stopped.

An extremely piercing blast with a referee whistle slways seems to work.
