Internet Connection Speeds

Post by Band »

I have seen so many threads about poor connection speeds here in Cyprus, particularly in relation to uploads.

Earlier this evening I was talking to my son on Skype as he is at University in Wales. We were talking about connection speeds and he ran a speed test to check how good his connection was.

He proudly showed me his results. Ping 8ms, download 118Mb, upload 105Mb!

I am going to sulk now.

When we arrived in Cyprus to live we only had dial up, grief that was slow and expensive, Cyprus has less than a million in people who live here you cannot (as yet) expect super fast Internet speeds, personally I am happy with Cyta's 20MB speeds, we pay €49 a month with a phone too. With this I run several computers and two TV Units (Mags).

I agree uploads speeds are poor here, but for me 20MB downloads is OK to run all of my equipment, from time to time you will get problems but Cyta now sort you out in a short time with just a phone call, so no complaints now with Internet speed on Cyprus.

It's only 10MB in my area. You folks are very lucky and have nothing to complain about!

Recent DM article. What is interesting is not the high speeds but the low speeds some parts of the UK still suffer from. Maybe Cyprus isn't as bad as we tend to think.

We live in rural Shropshire - our speed is about 2½ with no chance of an increase even though the exchange has just been fibre enabled ...

The fastest broadband connection in the UK is Virgin BUT this depends on having fibre optic cable laid into your property. There are many areas that do not have this option.

The fastest landline connection is BT infinity with UP TO 76mbps.

Again, this depends on the type of cable connected to your property. You mave have fibre connected to a junction box 3 streets away but if you have copper wire from your house then it is a bit like driving down an old farm track in order to get to the motorway.

The best that most people get is about 20 mbps, nowhere near the advertised 76!!

Many years ago whilst working in Nicosia we were lucky enough to piggy back onto the military satellite link, now that is really fast.

It always surprises me, when they show film of bomb damaged Middle East areas, there is no end of people using mobile phones. I am sure that citizens of Britain would have loved that facility in 39. Progress, eh!!

I suppose if you are downloading something then you would appreciate a high speed.
But here in Polemi we have around 7mbps. We can run two laptops and a mag box on that, and even on lower speeds..

Our latest building project is in Barmouth on the Welsh coast - we asked about FTTP (Fibre to the premies)

Openreach quoted over £20K!!

We are talking of Cyprus Internet?

Again you cannot expect super fast Internet speeds on Cyprus, maybe the future who knows, but until recently 10 megs was fine to run all of my equipment, now the free upgrade (Dee) with Cyta it runs as the above photo I posted, it is smooth too for TV streaming, no complaints from me.

e.g. forwarding pictures etc to loved ones overseas.
I have 10 Mb download which is fine, but 0.8 Mb upload is not just pathetic, it is bad news and timewasting.
We are with Cyta.

Just compress the images, or shrink them to a more managable size.

I upload countless images all the time, and have no problem with the upload speed you quote. All my blog images are max width 1024px and about 100-200k in size. You can upload 40 of those in the same time as you could upload a standard uncompressed 4000x3000 pixel photo.

Ditto if you are uploading to youtube. There is no need to upload a 200mb film when you can process it down to 10mb.

And, if you do that, you will find you can store a hell of a lot more images in the same space, AND, you can back them up more easily too.

Thanks for that. Still slow even then at 0.8 Mb. Too slow for me anyway.

You've just need to spend a little bit of time getting to know the tools that you have available to you.

It's fair to say that Virgin's 50% (ish) broadband fibre coverage of the UK is fastest. I'm on Superfibre 200, which typically tests at 220mbps download and 12.5mbps upload, for £20 a month (not inc line rent for phone).

But hang on, Virgin need to wake up! My m8 John in York joined a Talk-Talk local trial for Gigabit FTTP broadband a year ago, as one of their testers. 1 gbps download and 1 gbps upload. No line rental needed, it's all dealt with on VOIP, including 999 emergency calls!

He pays £20 a month for that (and has long since nuked his Virgin contract). This gives us an idea of how broadband will develop in the UK in the future (and hopefully, Cyprus too)...
