Site stuff

Post by Dominic »

I have been mulling a couple of things over about the site in my head, so I thought I would ask you your opinions.

1. The Events
I am about to add a load more events to the system. This generates automatic posts in the events section. Now this may seem silly, but do those automatic posts annoy you? I ask because most regulars use the forum in conjunction with "View New Posts", "View Active Topics" or "View Unread Posts". My fear is that people might get annoyed at having these feeds periodically full of events. I have tried adding events one or two at a time each day, but I inevitably forget. There may be ways to have the automatic posts without effecting the New Posts list, but before I investigate that, I thought I would ask to see if it is actually a problem.

2. Games and Puzzles
I will be the first to admit that the arcade hasn't really taken off. It wasn't helped by the fact that the games are all Flash which is no longer really supported. However, the puzzles section is still popular. I recently tried doing another puzzle (spot the difference) and it seemed to go down well, so I will be doing more of these. I will also be investigating a quiz engine for the site. But if anybody has any other ideas, just say.

3. Facebook
I like Facebook, as do some of the people on the forum. Some people here hate it though. Paphos Life does has it's own facebook page, but that is mainly for site announcements to publicise blogs. I was thinking about starting a Paphos Life facebook chat group. The aim is not to draw people away from this forum, rather the reverse. Anyway, I just took the plunge and created the group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/paphoschat/
Let's just see what happens. NB: you are under no obligation to join this group. THIS forum will still be here. As will the quizzes, the webcams, the directory, the blogs, and the events section. Even the med prices, which gets about 8 hits a month, will still be here. So rest assured. :)

4. Any other business.
If there are any other issues, please just send me a PM rather than add to the thread here. It will only make things confusing.

The Events are fine but - they appear in multiples or so it seems, and in more than one location so the subject headline is repeated at least twofold. That's what I find annoying 😉 because I use the New Posts view.....

It is already confusing, e.g. as per Photolady's comments above.
No need to further complicate it.

The title isn't the same every time. The date will change. What I could do though, is put the date first. Then you would see it more prominently.

To my mind, nothing is broken so there is no need to fix it.

My daily routine with PL is first to check the Webcams, to see what the weather is up to over there. Next I hit Board Index, to see if there are any new (non-General Discussion) topics to browse. Then, into General, to play 'catch-up' from last night.

This routine works nice for me, thanks to all of Dom's hard work in the past 11 months!

I must admit, I don't need to visit the webcams, especially the Polemi one ;-)
But Every time I visit the site it is via 'New Posts', and then I don't miss anything.

Dominic my take on your ideas. Why not try them out just like you did with arcade & then measure the response

Having said that your site is far from getting stale :D

Well, nobody seems that bothered about the event posts, so I will move the date to the front and see how we get on.

Thanks for the responses. :)
