Football clubs tend to have more than one ball.

now days they might use twenty balls in a game, but back in the day only one was used, and when the ball ended in the stands , the fans would sometimes hold on to it , so as to waste time if their team was winning.

My Other Half says "Whoever gets his paws on it first!!!" Personally, I have never heard of this thingy with the ball before but, I can see why the player would want the trophy.
