New Firefox out today..

Post by trevnhil »

The new Firefox Quantum is out today. I have just downloaded it and it certainly is a faster Browser.

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ Don't worry, clicking the link does not download it. But you can read all about it and then download it if you think it is OK.
Or you can make other inquiries by searching the web..

Oh dear, that is not good for you. On mine bookmarks are on the top right in what looks like books on a shelf.
I still like it on my laptop..

I m no computer expert, or fanatic for that matter - just a regular PC user.
Could you please tell me why, and in what respect, and in detail, you think Firefox is better than internet explorer?
Thank you,
Amos.

Hi Amos. No I can't tell you, nor did I make such a claim.. Maybe a Google search would help you..
But if you are satisfied with Internet Explorer, maybe just leave things as they are.

"Internet Explorer" is older technology. Microsoft's latest browser is called "Edge". When you say Internet Explorer, do you mean "Internet Explorer", or do you mean "Edge"?

Assuming you are referring to Internet Explorer, and not Edge:

Older versions of web browsers can get out of date very quickly. As a rule of thumb, most website designers these days make sure that their sites work on the current versions of browsers, and up to two previous versions. So, if you are using IE10, for instance, nobody writing websites will care.

Why does that matter? Well, as the web evolves, websites evolve too, and take advantage of features introduced in modern browsers. So if you use an older browser, it may not function properly. Buttons that should be clickable might not be. That sort of thing.

Worse though, is the issue of security. Older versions of browsers will be less secure. Very old versions should be avoided at all costs, unless you are happy sticking to very well known and trusted sites.

And from a programmer's perspective, Internet Explorer kind of sucks.

Thanks for that Dominic.
I am using IE11, with Windows 7 (64 bit).
Not "edge" because I didn't like the look of Windows 10.
So, until support by Microsoft foe W7 expires, I will stick as I am.

W7 is (currently) fine and perfectly secure - what Dominic is trying to say is that IE is no longer as secure as it was whereas Edge, Firefox, Chrome etc are still having security updates.

Now back to Firefox .... what exactly is 'save to pocket' and why can't I remove it from my toolbar?

Thanks Trev - right click and select 'remove from toolbar' worked for me! :)

Hmmm... Firefox just auto-updated me from 56.02 to 57 on my Win7 32bit Home Premium desktop platform.

Yes, it 'apparently' lost my previous top right Bookmarks button. But when you click on the new 'bookshelf' icon (top right), there's an option in there to ADD your bookmarks to the top menu bar. I just tried it and voilá! It worked first time, it's icon appearing to the left of the button I'd just clicked!

But really, Mozilla should have picked this up as default from current settings, don't ye think?

Well I actually did the update myself and the bookmarks were all loaded.
But it would have been a good idea if yours had been automatic.
There is also a little open book (extreme right) and if you open the sidebars the bookmarks are all in there as well

I was updated without a 'by your leave' today. Can't say I notice much difference in general use, except that the horrendous Cyprus Mail website seems a little faster. I'll reserve my opinion on Pocket. The View ... icon could save some time if wanting to go backwards, probably better than the left arrow.

Faster for me certainly.

All bookmarks still seem to be where they were.

Major problem though ............ the print button just says "an error occurred while printing" and then throws out a blank piece of paper.

JB. I have just tried to print from my laptop wirelessly to the printer. I clicked the three menu bars on the top right. Then from the drop down menu I chose Print. On that page you can alter things and then press the Print button top left.. It worked fine..
