New Walkway

Post by ApusApus »

For those that cannot get to see the developing walkway that will straddle the 2 sides of the archaeological park in Paphos, here are a couple of photos taken this morning!

The first one shows the start (or is it going to be the end) of the walkway on the left hand side of the road down to the harbour. Incidentally, there has been a lot of work going on behind this point over the last month or so, around some of the excavation areas near the much unpublicised amphitheatre. Today, the main contractors are at work there building some additional steel structures .............. what they are for time will tell!

The next photo shows the walkway up to the road going down to the harbour

The final photo shows how the walkway will have to straddle the road before it continues down the right hand side but there appears to be a potential problem with the height of the support struts on this side which you can just make out appearing from behind the green grass area above the rock outcrop! On this view, the supports look around 15/18" too short so maybe the walkway will start its downward leg a bit earlier than originally envisaged!

They are going to put handrails around it, right?

Thanks for the pics Shane.

I am certain that this will be a major, and impressive attraction for Kato Paphos.

Looks to me that the walkway may cross to the other side of the road to the rocky area opposite?????

Yes that's right but there appears to be a shortfall if you draw a horizontal line from the existing walkway to the next connection point!

Hi Shane

Having re-read your post, I understand now what you were saying! I am sure (and hope) the engineers know what they are doing.
I am really looking forward to the completion

That's the plan, Mark.

I'd be interested to see a photo of the other end of the walkway that Shane mentions, by the little-publcised Amphitheature, if he could manage this maybe?

As presently shown this walkway also looks suitable to be a miniature train track... now that would be a tourist attraction!

That's fantastic Max.....
I shall be looking to do a little research later. Still looking for somewhere different to go for my 60th birthday next year.
Trains of the Pyrenees caught my attention, Norwegian fjords, a Moroccan riad or the French and Italian border areas. Too many places but we're keeping our options open until the last minute this time rather than booking in advance.

Yes, that's the sort of train I was thinking of, but maybe one which could take a few more passengers! But joking apart the Paphos trackway looks more flimsy that the with the minature train as is resting on its long legs... It will be most interesting to see what the one here looks like when it is finished. If its a walkway, though it could be a bit scary for anyone who doesn't like heights unless there is a good handrail!

Probably the reason that the Roman Theatre isn't publicsised is because its on a site which is still being excavated by teams of Archaeologists from an Australian Uni who come each year to excavate in and immediateky around it. It is closed when they are not here and it would be dangerous to walk round it as there are some deep pits and trenches. So not safe for casual visitors.

Not really to do with the Mayor as it is under the care of the Antiquities Dept, as are all the Archaeological sites.
