Discount on 'council tax' for over 75's in Tala?

Post by J B »

Our house is rented out to a lady who is now aged 75.

The Tala Board bills are all in our name for simplicity and have been for the last 5 years of the tenancy.

She has heard a rumour that she can get discount for 'over 75's', but when I asked in the office yesterday, there were the normal Cypriot Shrugs and "the secretary is not here, you have to ask her!"

Does anyone have any experience of sorting this??

Don't know about Tala, some areas give discount for over 75s, some do not. Where they do the bill MUST be in the name of the 75 year old - in your case the tenant.

When we lived in Tala, the named person on the bill was over 75, we never got a discount. Now, in Tremithousa, the discount comes in at over 65. I think each muktar makes there own rules!

It would make eminent sense if the bill had the name and DOB of the owner/landlord, and ditto for the current tenant also mentioned, surely? :?

This is Cyprus - Cyprus logic.
To get the discount (where available) the bill MUST be in the name of the claimant (whether Landlord, owner, or tenant) and that person MUST produce proof of payment of State Pension (whether UK, or Cyprus). Some Councils also want proof of age (passport for example) and some pay over 65s, some over 70s, some over 75s, some not at all. Claimants MUST be in receipt of a State Pension in most cases - although some may go just on age. It varies wherever you live, so check with the local Council.

The Tala Mukhtar has been in hospital following a heart attack, poor lady.
In Kili there is nothing to help the elderly as far as I can find out.
Whether there is any discount in village taxes is a decision which seems to be made in a piecemeal way in individual villages.
But the future of the actual running of the different villages seems likely to change (though is being resisted), as the EU has said that Cyprus has far too many Mukhtars and officials , thus the system is far too expensive, and they want the number to be drasticalky reduced. This will mean that villages could be grouped together by area, so run more efficiently and cheaply. So we'll have to wait and see what transpires!
