Restaurants still open?

Post by Two sheets »

Hi,

I am coming over on Saturday 28th October and just wondered if the Santa Barbara restaurant at Argaka and Oniros near Coral Bay will still be open. I know that both close for the winter season and just wondered when this will be. Thanks for your help.

If you get no definite answers on here, it might be an idea to look them up on the internet Elaine and give them a ring :-)

I don't know about Santa Barbaras, but Oniros tends to close once the owner reckons that the good weather is over. It is in a very exposed position, being as you know, mainly an outdoors sort of place and right on the coast.

Walked past Oniro yesterday and everything is packed away until presumably next year.

Is there a time in Cyprus when most restaurants are shut?

Many restaurants in the Paphos area close on Monday, rather like Fish 'n Chip shops in the UK.

Periclis in Nata certainly does. But being an ex-Chef in a 5* Hotel, he uses Monday to do a 'deep clean' in his kitchen, with all the appliances pulled out one by one. You could eat your dinner off of his kitchen tiles afterwards!

And if you're a regular and maybe a friend, and happen to be passing by on a Monday lunchtime, he'll still happily serve you drinks and dips (mini meze, as he likes to call them), and proudly show you what he's up to in his kitchen on his 'day off' !!

Al, Wonder if you have seen his taverna since he added a huge glass and metal extension at the back? It has quite changed the look of his place. Of course he can accomodate a lot more people on Sundays and holidays, but to my mind the new bit has absolutely no character, I much prefer to be inside the original structure. I remember that on cold winter days they would light the fire and that made it seem cozy.

Thanks Dee and Lloyd for the updates on Periclis Taverna in Nata!

I understand Lloyd's comment about accommodating wedding and christening celebrations. Maybe when Periclis married Anthi and they held their wedding reception in a taverna in Nata village square itself, (to which I was invited), it got them thinking about their future business plans?

But I must say that when I was last their in 2008, Peri already had 'overflow' capacity at the rear, in terms of sheltered tables and chairs, to allow for full-house Sunday buffet lunches. The fact that he has further enhanced this extended area with a proper weatherproof structure (that must have cost them a good few bob) cannot be frowned upon.

Spoilt for choice in the east or in eats? LOL!

From fuzzy memory, Peri and Anthi married during 2001, when I came out for two 3 month stints, then a fortnight in October. Thus spending more time in Cyprus than I did in UK that year.

But check with him (or her) next time you are up there for your bulk stuffed tomatoes takeaway!
