Extra immigration checks

Post by WHL »

Following on from the debates on the forum re, changes for expats after Brexit, for those of you who keep spinning the same old line that nothing will change for us after Brexit, I just read an interesting post on the Eastern forum, an expat came back to Larnaca and when showing his passport he and his wife were asked to show their Yellow slip?...I haven't posted the link because im not sure if this is allowed, but its interesting reading for what hoops we might have to jump through after Brexit,

I don't believe a word of it.

If a passenger has a valid passport, especially one that it is British and has the words 'EU' stamped all over it, there is no reason for Immigration at either airport to ask to see a ''Yellow Slip'.

The Cyprus authorities are not going to ask every British passport holder who comes to Cyprus, for which there are hundreds of thousands annually, to present a 'Yellow Slip' for which almost all know nothing about as they are tourists.

It is known from their system that you are a permanent resident, so what is the problem of showing your yellow slip. I've always a copy with me (one in my passport and one in my handbag). No problem at all.

Go on the Eastern forum and read it for your self, why would the poster lie?... off cause they aint going to ask every UK passport holder if they have a Yellow slip, what they can do, is check the ones who's name pings up on the computer, the computer can tell how long you have been in Cyprus, hence the asking for a yellow slip to see if you are legal or not, just my take on it.

The fact is that the police can ask for your yellow slip at any time, whether you are an EU citizen or not. Having an EU passport allows you into Cyprus for up to 3 months. Staying longer without a yellow slip (or a visa) is an offence and subject to a considerable fine. Therefore it is reasonable for the police to check for "overstayers" when the opportunity arises.
Those of us who are married to non-EU citizens are used to this and having our partners stopped and questioned. I suggest fellow Brits start getting used to it too.

I was asked a few years ago, before Brexit ever came about, at passport control returning to Paphos if I had my yellow slip. My answer was 'yes.' Not suggested that I should carry it nor have I ever. Make of that what you will.

For those of us who are permanent residents with yellow papers there is nothing to worry about as we are in the system.
For those who won't or can't be bothered getting registered there is going to be a problem at some point.

Hmm well we shall make sure to carry a copy of our yellow slips from now on. Good idea I suppose. Would still like to know about the Migration dept though.

I did see in the paper receently that Cyprus has been asked by the EU to introduce more stringent checks on passengers at the airports. Also passenger security at the airport has been delegated to a specialist security company instead of the police, as it was before.
So that may possibly be the reason why unexpected questions are being asked to check on who is legally resident here.
But as long as your passport is valid and you also carry your yellow slip or your Cyprus ID card, you should have no problem.
However, after the Brexit things may be different. I think that after Brexit, the Cyprus Govt will have more freedom in deciding the conditions under which Brits in general can live here.
It's their country.

One thing I have never understood is that the address on the Yellow Slip remains the same even when you move and there is no system in place to update the address to your current abode. Particularly when other documents eg utility bills show your current residential address. As a result, even though a Yellow Slip has been issued there is no way for the Immigration Department to check the person is still at the same address.

Dee, I can understand your comments. I have posted this elsewhere on more than one occasion, but my granddaughter lives here with me, has done for over 4 years now, but has a different surname. On entering the UK I'm always questioned on this and always carry court orders etc to prove identities, permissions etc.

Up to July this year I had never been questioned nor queried on either leaving or re-entering Paphos, but when travelling to the UK in July this year my documents were queried and verified by two immigration officers when leaving Paphos.

So there may be truth in what you are saying.

Addendum to my post above - in the querying and questions at Paphos airport, yellow slips were never mentioned, it was just to do with parental permissions, which were overridden by the court documents.

I travel from both LCA and PFO airports on a regular monthly basis and have done for over 15 yrs only twice have I been asked if I had a yellow slip and only once to provide my home address. However this last year when coming into LCA on arrival my passport has been scanned several times . I don't link it to Brexit but to increased security due the recent terrorist incidents within Europe.
