Ricco beach

While I was in Pafos last week I was watching the big crane picking up rocks and moving them and was not sure what this was all about . A bit sad really watching this but it made me think as I never seen them being loaded or nothing. Could anyone help me out. Have I been dim

They are developing this area one that I use daily almost, they are making breakwaters this is ongoing now for several years, just back from the beach area from Riccos cafe eastwards is going to be developed into restaurants, bars and the like, when they will start is anyone guess, Cyprus is not known for rapid transactions these days

You can just see off in the distance these rock groins and the crane. The large boulders come on flat barges the crane places them in the sea, where do the rocks come from? I have no idea sorry.

There has been noticeable erosion along the Geroskipou beach as shown on photographs at Geroskipou Municipality Office. A couple of comments from local papers:

'The mayor added that the construction of six breakwaters in the sea off the Geroskipou coast got underway at the beginning of the year and will run from where work in the sea stopped three and a half years ago and continue to the east of Geroskipou. “We already have six wave breakers in place and the new ones will cost three million euros. One has just been completed, and it took four months. It’s a time consuming process and this phase will be completed in one and a half years’ time,” he said.

In addition, plans for the next stage of breakwaters which will run from the sea at Geroskipou municipal beach and along to Bania in Kato Paphos are also planned'.

@Jim: when Coco is taking you for a walk past Riccos Beach (always making sure you have a lead attached, so you don't wander off and get lost)- what's your gut feeling there, m8?

Will the Geroskipou Municipiality come in and bulldoze his premises flat? Or will Andreas and his wife perhaps manage to survive there another decade or two?

Do not know what will happen to Riccos cafe ( Geroskipou beach) , but they are going to develop from there to the east, work should already be well on the way, but this is Cyprus and so far only a little clearance work has been done, and of course those sea groin workings that have been going on for several years, they told me it was to protect the beach sand but usually in winter storms they remove themselves and get replaced by seaweed, it is never going to be a wonderful sandy beach but it is well used by locals, and yes even there dogs too. Coco does not need a lead AL she never moves from my side.

Have to say the cafe is not my cup of tea AL. Hot water out of a tap, NO!

The photo on that article is not Riccos beach as I know it, not absolutely sure where the picture was taken, further west I think!

Statement for the beach

This long stone and sand beach dates back to the mid-1970s, when a local called Ricco opened a beach bar, followed over the next few years by many others. Their careful attention to detail resulted in the creation of a slightly surreal Mediterranean oasis. Thanks to the resounding success of "Ricco's Beach", as Geroskipou Beach came to be called unofficially, the city authorities have deposited thousands of tons of sand on it, turning what was an austere and dreary stretch of the coast into a beautiful beach. Today you will find plenty of modern bars and restaurants and a water sports operator on the spot. Artificial breakwaters make the water very calm - fantastic for swimming and snorkelling

The municipality has also been granted licenses for three snack bars along the beach, which will all be reasonably small, around 150m2, and have toilets, changing rooms and other facilities, said Pavlides.

“These will be put out to tender and one of the three will be Riccos, which will be rebuilt.”

That is great news, thanks, galexinda! I hope they manage to conserve the unique 'feel' of Riccos Beach, including all the wildlife that Andreas keeps there...

Who remembers the little white goat that used to trot around all the tables? I used to buy slices of bread to wander over and feed his ducks and geese with, LOL! Mind you, with two new neigbouring similar establishments, Riccos might have to finally reconsider his beer prices, given the added competition?

Last time I was there (2008) a large 630ml bottle of Carlsberg cost €3-50 - later same evening, I'd be drinking the same for €2-40 in Alexanders Bar... But I considered the price difference reasonable, given that I was sitting 20 metres from the Med, listening to the waves rippling in.

If Riccos is really going to be re built lets hope that is both cleaner and more hygenic as far as the kitchen is concerned. It's been OK for a drink out of a bottle, but the lack of general hygiene and proper toilets and also hand washing facilities puts me off! I don't usually go to Riccos, prefering Corallia Beach. Calm sea there (usually), sandy, clean and has modern facilities too!

Bonamare beach cafe near the airport is cheaper and has a far better situation, try it AL.Its OK AL no problem finding the info!
